Mexican GP corner named after F1 world champion Nigel Mansell

Mexican Grand Prix organisers have named the final corner of its upgraded circuit after Nigel Mansell, ahead of the return of Formula 1 to the country in November.

Mansell has been honoured as the last winner of the Mexican GP in 1992, on his way to winning the world championship with Williams.

Turn 17, the final corner on the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez in Mexico City, has been renamed the Nigel Mansell Turn.

The turn is the later part of the old iconic Peraltada right-hander at the end of the lap.

For safety reasons due to a lack of run-off area, the new layout bypasses the first part of the corner, instead turning right, through a baseball stadium on the infield, before rejoining halfway around the former Peraltada.

"I have extremely fond memories of racing in Mexico City, the people, the energy and the track itself were all highlights of the F1 calendar back then for me," said Mansell.

"When I found out about the turn naming of course I was delighted. Flattered, proud and delighted in equal measure.

"The news instantly brought to mind my unexpected overtaking manoeuvre on Gerhard Berger actually on the old Peraltada section to come in second behind my Ferrari team-mate Alain Prost back in 1990 - I can't believe that was 25 years ago and that it's been 23 years since my last win at the track.

"I've carefully observed what the organisers have been doing and I'm really looking forward to seeing it for myself a little later this year."
