OCAT, our open source capture and analytics tool, has come a really long way since the 1.1 release around this time last year. The focus in that time has has been feedback-driven changes, to continue to mould it into something truly useful for game developers and performance analysts alike.
If you haven’t used OCAT before, here’s the top-level description before we dive into the details of what’s new in 1.2: OCAT runs in parallel with your game, sampling available performance metrics provided by the system, to give you an accurate view of frame timing, pacing and delivery that’s as lightweight and unintrusive as possible. Combined with an optional runtime overlay that lets you view the data in real-time as the game is running, OCAT is primarily for performance analysis, helping to discover and fix issues in frame pacing.
The changes in 1.2 are too numerous to go through in full here, so please read the changelog to get a more complete list, but we’ll cover the 3 major groups of changes: VR/AR/MR HMD support, data visualisation, and system information gathering.
OCAT now supports in-HMD overlay support, so you can visualise what’s happening while wearing the HMD, and we’ve worked hard on making sure that works with HTC Vive, Oculus Rift and the Windows Mixed Reality platform. OCAT also collects runtime-specific information for each system where it can, so you can get a view of things like warp misses. Frame delivery in VR systems is crucial for a good experience, so OCAT lets you dig into the VR-specific details to help with that. You can also filter out events from the VR composition systems to help isolate the game’s contribution to performance before frames are handed off to the compositor that presents to the HMD.
OCAT also has a new tool for visualising capture sessions, including multiple sessions at once. You can capture your renderer once, make a change, run it again and get a new capture, and then take a look at those together to see what effect your change had on performance. You can also see VR specific events in there, building on the new VR system support.
For system information, we’ve built platform information and GPU-specific data capture into OCAT, so you don’t have to dig around to figure out the key details of the hardware platform you’re running on. That could be helpful when customers are reporting performance issues: get them to capture with OCAT and send you the capture session and you’ll get as much detail about their hardware as we can detect.
Note that GPU memory clock is only reported on AMD systems, and for Intel we only report the GPU family rather than the specific GPU model. We detect GPU core clock and memory size on all vendors.
OCAT is developed out in the open on GitHub (note that most of the activity between releases takes place on the dev
branch!), the documentation is visible at ReadTheDocs, we’re issue-driven as much as possible and welcome contributions in any form, from anyone that’s interested in helping improve it. Even if that’s just a bug or compatibility report where OCAT doesn’t work, please get involved!
