Byrne aboard at InnovationAus

By Elliott Richardson in Media News on
Tech and science journalist Seamus Byrne has taken up the role of managing editor at InnovationAus, following a stint at ScienceAlert as the site’s managing editor.

He joins the independent publication set up by veteran journalist James Riley with a view to further improving its content, as well as to take some of the pressure off Riley.

“The site has grown a lot over the last three years. James started it as a blog, but now there are event structures around it, there's a really strong newsletter that runs. But this is all being run by James, a team of freelancers and a couple of internal writers, and I've come in to put routines and structures in place so that it can now keep growing because it's got to that point where it's a bit too big for James to run on his own,” Byrne says.

“I'm excited to find those ways that I can bring new kinds of angles to what's been going on but also there's a lot of the general t

Nine-Fairfax merger clears ACCC checkpoint

By Jonas Lopez in Media News on

The Nine Network-Fairfax Media merger has passed the ACCC review.

ACCC chairman Rod Sims announced today that an extensive review of the merger documents showed no potential violations of the Competition and Consumer Act.

The review sought to address the local industry’s demand for online news, current affairs reportage, and investigative journalism, and how the merger may affect the market in light of both companies’ multi-platform reach. The assessors concluded that Nine and Fairfax’s main assets are not competing against each other, with Nine’s news and current affairs programs going for mass audience while Fairfax’s print and online media focuses on detailed content.

“The ACCC recognises there will likely be changes to the way Fairfax and Nine operate in future, either due to the changing media landscape more generally or due to the merger itself. However, we reached the conclusion that if such changes do occur, they would not be, to a signifi

Hodge nets ACFID honour

By Jonas Lopez in Media News on

Amanda Hodge, Southeast Asia correspondent of The Australian, was recently accorded media honours from the Australian Council for International Development (ACFID).

The Council stated that Hodge earned the ACFID 2018 media award for covering the Rohingya refugee crisis in Myanmar, with one of her stories standing out about a hospital in Bangladesh amidst the tension.

The selectors said Hodge’s clear writing and focusing on the Rohingya refugees showed truth and integrity to the story while making it highly relevant for the Australian public.

The Australian foreign editor James Morrisson accepted the award on Hodge’s behalf, as she is currently working out of Jakarta, Indonesia.

“Amanda is one of our most experienced correspondents. She is tenacious, compassionate, hardworking and accomplished. She is proud to have won this award, as are we of her," said Morrisson.

SEN SA’s new Drive show has welcomed a new team on board, featuring journalist Michelangelo Rucci and former Nine Network presenter Kym Dillon.

The pair are very familiar to South Australian audiences with Rucci a long-time feature in the Adelaide sports journalism landscape and Dillon a former South Australian football player and Nine News Adelaide presenter.

“Rooch and I have worked together for many years so I’m thrilled to be reunited on 1629 SEN SA,” said Dillon.

“We are different personalities and enjoy an often ‘lively’ relationship which should make for good listening on the drive home. Plus, as a passionate Crows supporter, I’ll keep Rooch honest!”

Their show, Kymbo and the Rooch, will air from 4PM to 6PM on weekdays beginning 6 December.

Dillon and Rucci join former Port Adelaide Power AFL player Kane Cornes, sports journalist Gerard Whateley and The Front Bar host Andy Maher at the soon-to-be-launched station.

By Jonas Lopez in Media News on

Bruno Bouchet has finished up as the producer of KIIS 106.5 FM’s The Kyle & Jackie O Show.

“I’ve been doing radio since I was 15. Now, as a balding 32-year-old, it’s time to close that chapter of my life and embark on a new journey. I’ve made lifelong friends along the way and have been blessed to work with some of the most inspiring and beautiful people I’ll ever meet,” said Bouchet over social media.

An ARN representative said Bouchet has opted not to renew his contract for another term next year. He had been with the show for two years and is expected to finish next month. A new EP will be recruited for the show, the official added.

Bouchet has opted to return to tech and home appliances vendor Shriro.
