Some believe that the Cold War ended in 1991, when the Soviet Union fell apart. In retrospect, many observers also believe that a golden opportunity was missed to heal the wounds inflicted by over 45 years to hostility between the Washington and Moscow. Rather than encouraging development of a Russia that would adhere to Western European norms for elections, transparency and individual liberties, some in Europe and America instead sought to steal the country’s natural resources and other assets, a process that went on for some years under President Boris Yeltsin. The looting went hand-in-hand with particularly inept political moves on the part of President Bill Clinton, who ignored end of Cold War agreements to not use the break-up of the Soviet Union as an excuse to bring its former member states in Eastern Europe into NATO or any other military alliance hostile to Russia. The process of NATO expansion continues to this day, together with military maneuvers and the placement of new missile systems right along the Russian border, increasing Moscow’s justifiable paranoia about its security.
The military moves have been accompanied by a political deep freeze, particularly ironic as President Donald Trump during his campaign for office pledged to improve relations with Russia. They are now at their lowest ebb since the hottest days of the Cold War, including as they do the totally bogus sanctioning of Russian government officials under the maliciously conceived Magnitsky Act and the ongoing saga of Russiagate, which blames Moscow for interference in America’s 2016 election, so far without any real evidence being provided.
For those who think all of this is theater, think again. Some critics are beginning to recognize that the United States has become a country addicted to war and one need look no farther than the federal budget, where everything is being cut except military spending, which is set to increase even though there is no country or group of countries in the world that genuinely threaten the U.S.
Two recent stories in particular demonstrate just how far Washington has gone towards accepting that war has more-or-less become a natural condition for the United States of America. The first is an article “After years of fighting insurgencies, the Army pivots to training for a major war” that has largely been ignored, regarding how the U.S. military is changing its doctrine and training to enable it to fight a major war against a powerful national opponent. Previously, the armed forces were emphasizing countering non-government hostile agents like al-Qaeda and ISIS, the so-called counter-insurgency doctrine or COIN. According to Pentagon spokesmen, the shift is in recognition of the fact that over the horizon major conflicts are no longer as unthinkable as they once were.
According to the article, U.S. commanders are now beginning to emphasize the type of training that prevailed during the Cold War, tanks against tanks, artillery bombardments, and use of close air support. The change in doctrine derives from the 2018 National Defense Strategy assessment, which identified four national players that might go to war with the United States. They are major powers Russia and China, supplemented by nuclear North Korea and conventionally armed Iran.
The transition was discussed by former and current senior officers at the recent annual meeting of the Association of the U.S. Army, with particular concern being expressed that the “lessons learned” from the past seventeen years of insurgency warfare not be lost as the military returns to a more conventional model. There was also concern that the army is insufficiently resourced to continue to fight insurgencies while also taking on a major conventional component. Some officers believed that the army can handle both jobs simultaneously, but others were not so sure, observing that one really needs two distinct armies, one trained for conventional warfare and the other trained for insurgency operations, which are far more likely to occur and which are more difficult to manage.
Gen. Stephen Townsend, head of the Army’s Training and Doctrine Command, explained that “The future of war will be a hybrid threat. There’ll be everything from tanks and missiles and fighter-bombers down to criminal gangs, terrorists, suicide bombers and guerrilla cells. … We’re going to have to do all of that, the full spectrum of conflict.”
General David Petraeus, the “very model of a modern major general” i.e. one who never actually experiences combat, put his finger on why the change to conventional warfare is taking place now. It’s all about money, or as he put it, “it’s about getting resources. And big wars get you big resources.”
Retired Lt. General Guy Swan explained the challenge for the Army in military-speak, citing the career of his son, a West Point produced first lieutenant “…who hasn’t deployed to Afghanistan or Iraq, and what he’s been doing has been tank gunnery. He is focused on Russians and other high-end competitors.”
Between Petraeus’ comment on “big” resources and Swan’s on enemies to be killed as “high-end competitors” one might well begin to understand what today’s bloated defense establishment is all about. More money and business school jargon to euphemize wars and killing, with little regard for the possible consequences, including those competitors’ possession of nuclear weapons and the ability to deliver them on target. Russia has already warned that if it were attacked by a superior force (NATO) it would used tactical nuclear weapons as a first resort to defend itself. So much for learning tank gunnery.
The second article, also little commented on, made plain that the “competitive” army that is now evolving won’t be just some pretty toy sitting on a shelf unused. The former US commander in Europe from 2014-7 retired Lt. General Ben Hodges spoke at the Warsaw Security Forum on October 24th, where he told NATO allies that they would have to increase defense spending because the United States will not be able to protect them against a “resurgent Russia” while it is fighting China. He predicted that the U.S. will probably be at war with China within 15 years to protect its interests in the Pacific region.
Hodges cited increasing tension between Washington and Beijing in the South China Sea, China’s alleged “constant stealing [of] technology,” and Beijing’s perfectly legal purchasing of infrastructure in Africa, Latin America and Europe through the funding of and investment in projects. There was no mention of China actually threatening the United States and those were presumably Hodges’ reasons for going to war against a powerful nuclear armed nation.
Hodges is currently a strategic expert with the Center for European Policy Analysis, a Washington-based think tank that is heavily funded by globalists, NATO governments, and democracy promoters. Supporters include the U.S. government funded National Endowment for Democracy, the U.S. Mission to NATO, the NATO Public Diplomacy Division, the U.S. Department of Defense, the U.S. Department of State, the Lockheed Martin Corporation, the Raytheon Company, the European Defense Agency, the Chevron Corporation, Bell Helicopter, Textron Systems and BAE Systems. Oh yes, and also the neocon heavy United States Institute of Peace. The Center’s “experts” and staff are top heavy with Eastern Europeans who are focused on the threat from Russia, as is the institute. Donations to the Center are fully tax deductible by the IRS.
The awfulness of the two articles should be evident. The Army is only “under-resourced” if one considers its appropriate role to be continuously fighting countries in Asia and Europe that pose no threat to the United States. And the reality is that there is no reason for China and Russia to be viewed as threats at all. They are only turning into enemies due to the actions of the United States in their own neighborhoods, to include the NATO expansion and other provocations in the Middle East. Regarding China, the U.S. clearly believes that it is entitled to a sphere of influence that includes the entire Pacific Ocean while China cannot assert that it has any interests on own doorstep in the South China Sea.
And then there is the Strangelovean General Hodges and his pro-war establishment think tank. I wonder how much he gets paid for being a dependable mouthpiece for continuous aggression? He “predicts” war with China within 15 years. And what are the issues for what would justify risking a nuclear war? China stealing technology and protecting its local interests in Asia. And investing in the third world to acquire access to resources, which is precisely what the United States and Europeans have been doing to their benefit for many, many years. Smedley Butler once opined that “war is a racket.” If he were around today he would probably say that it is in reality a low-risk high-cost business designed to keep “heroes” like Petraeus, Swan, Townsend and Hodges fully employed.

The U.S./Israel supports ISIS and Al Qaeda in Syria. They spend large amounts of money providing protection and material support to ISIS/AQ. I wouldn’t be surprised if American taxpayers are also funding ISIS & Al Qaeda retention bonuses and pensions.

For me, Phil here exhibits the most irritating of blindspots at the core of most Americans’ discussion about their military.
The USM isn’t “fighting countries in Asia and Europe” to protect America. It long ago grew far beyond what’s necessary to secure the American nation against foreign threats. The various National Guards and Coast Guard are probably adequate for that. Somewhere along the way it took on a qualitatively different mission. Since then it’s been fighting for Global Hegemony.
Global Hegemony is the mission its civilian elites & overseers have set it, and that’s the mission it’s trying to execute when it goes off in search of monsters to destroy in the Hindu Kush, the Levant, and in the S. China Sea.
Given its mission, it’s wholly “appropriate role” is to be fighting everywhere, all the time until Global Hegemony is secured. Global really means global.
Over the past decade, Russia and China have emerged as the biggest monsters out there, and they’ve grown to a size and influence that now threatens, not the American nation, but the USM’s primary mission. So, they must be fought and fought successfully. If they’re allowed to develop peacefully, the USM’s mission is forfeit, dreams of Global Hegemony die, and America shrinks back to being a normal Great Power at best, or a bankrupt failed state at worst. Having bet the farm on the mission, the latter is more likely, so failure is not a contemplatable option.
Given the mission, the only question is how to fight Russia & China while keeping all the peripheral mini-monsters at bay. The answer, as any bureaucrat knows, is to add resources.
May I point out, Mr. Giraldi, the solution to all of this is right in front of us .
Every individual behind every think tank, media outlet, journalist enterprise, and crooked politician who conspired to defraud us into illegal war should have all their assets seized, right away, to pay down the heinous debt their lies created.

I’ve frequently had occasion to ask the reason for ISIS’ theatrical and cartoonish violence. Why, if it genuinely wants to establish a Caliphate, does it act exactly like a stereotypical Hollywood Evil Enemy That Must Be Destroyed By The Good Guys? It could have easily created its Caliphate without the orange jumpsuits and videotaped beheadings, which in any case were pointless in terms of strategy (it didn’t do an iota of harm to the alleged Western enemy). Instead they increased the likelihood of a foreign intervention, which, if ISIS were to be considered to be a serious movement, would only harm its own long term prospects. Also, in that case, the signal failure of America to hurt ISIS from 2014-15 (or during its attack on Palmyra in 2016) is incomprehensible. Why weren’t long columns of ISIS fuel lorries in the Iraqi and East Syrian desert touched until the Russians began bombing them? Why did America bomb Syrian Army positions at Deir Az Zor, allowing ISIS to capture Jebel Thardah and cut off Deir airport from the city? Why did America train and arm “moderate rebels” whom the trainers knew were Salafists who would desert to ISIS and al Qaeda at the first opportunity?
However, if you assume that ISIS is a tool of western imperialism, and its cartoonish violence is meant only to create an image as an enemy who must be defeated by all means, even if that means involves several new wars of choice and the permanent imperialist occupation of much of the resource rich areas of the planet, then it suddenly makes more sense.

What can bring down the US is countries using currencies other than the US dollar to pay for oil and other things, thereby weakening the dollar, causing interest rates to rise which will shatter the patina of economic strength that’s just barely covering the massive amounts of debt.
The other is the US itself experiencing some sort of breakdown in civil society which seems to be the direction it’s headed in. Ironic that the same people who foment civil discord everywhere else to benefit themselves are doing it at home too. The Jews are shitting in their own swimming pool, I guess they just can’t help it.
Practical objection: their resources aren’t sufficient to erase the damage their crimes have caused. A small dent, at most.

Actually, the Army never fully embraced Petreus’ COIN doctrine, they’ve been trying to switch training back to “conventional” since 2010. There appears to be some difficulty in outright trashing a 4-star who managed to get a bit of doctrine rammed down everyone’s throat. There’s a momentum in DoD that takes a while to overcome, but it’s been a long time since any training scenario was to have more than 20% COIN related material in it.
It’s sort of ridiculous to worry about who some asshat thinks we’re going to be at war with in 15 years, the US doesn’t have that much time till it financially implodes. The best that the GOP appears to be offering is $trillion/year deficits, the left would like to up the ante to $6trillion a year.
Ultimately, there’s no real possibility of confronting Russia or China, there’s almost no scenario that doesn’t escalate to nuclear exchange.

Until the Soviet Union actually collapsed, nobody thought it was going to, least of all Gorbachev. Why would Gorbachev make an agreement covering a hypothesis he was totally unwilling to envisage? That makes no sense other than as “pretext politics”: if one pretext doesn’t “sell”, trot out another which leads to the same conclusion.
Conversely, even if it is assumed that Mr Giraldi’s claims are accurate, how does he propose to solve the problem the US has created? He doesn’t say. He just complains about the situation but has no proposal to offer. He doesn’t even propose that the US should capitulate to Putin. The US may well have created a vicious circle, bringing forth a revisionist in Russia who can now only be dealt with by war in the same way that the Versailles Treaty brought forth a revisionist in Germany.

What became ISIS had its genesis in one Abu Musab al Zarqawi, a Jordanian thug turned jihadi who got religion and went off to fight the USSR in Afghanistan. Like other jihadis, he was welcome to go, but less than welcome to come back, and was fairly promptly imprisoned on charges of promoting terrorism when back in Jordan. When King Abdullah took over he was released as part of an amnesty and permitted to go to Pakistan; the Jordanian security services knew well that he was up to something but didn’t mind as long as he was off jihading somewhere else. From Pakistan he went to Afghanistan, then after the American invasion, from Afghanistan to the Kurdish “state” in Iraq, where the Kurds let him set up a base with other jihadis from Afghanistan. After the Iraq invasion, he promptly recruited jihadis and unilaterally set up an al Qaeda franchise in Iraq. This franchise, strangely enough, didn’t fight the occupation – its targets were Shia, both civilian and other Shia militia fighting the occupation. This by the way was in direct opposition to al Qaeda boss Ayman al Zawahiri, who advised not attacking the Shia. Still, Zarqawi’s success was enough for Zawahiri (and bin Laden or someone claiming to speak for bin Laden, assuming he was still alive) to officially recognise Zarqawi’s al Qaeda in Iraq (AQI). The AQI’s primary target remained Shia and its primary purpose a sectarian civil war in Iraq, which of course meant that both sides had little energy left over to fight the occupation and in fact legitimised the occupation, which could claim it was there to maintain order. By the time Zarqawi was killed in an airstrike in 2006, the anti occupation rebellion had already long since morphed into a civil war, so he had served his purpose. By 2007 the Americans switched to paying tribes to not rebel, so the violence temporarily decreased, with the remnants of AQI biding their time, under a new chief who had been a former American prisoner, Abu Bakr al Baghdadi. It came after America began arming and funding Syrian jihadis in 2011-2, with whom AQI of course had long links. By 2013 AQI was all over East Syria as well as rising again in Iraq, and set up a Syrian franchise, Jabhat al Nusra. Then there began differences over oil and revenue between Baghdadi and Jabhat chief Golani. Zawahiri took Golani’s side, ordered Baghdadi to limit himself to Iraq, and hand over Syria to Golani. Baghdadi of course refused, and with the majority of al Nusra defecting to AQI, he combined them to form ISIS.
All of which tends to show that while America didn’t actually create ISIS, it certainly allowed it to happen, and was more than happy to use it as a tool,as Kerry admitted in a recording in 2015 or 6 as I recall.

Sounds like New Port Richey, I go there several times a year. Meanwhile, the mil-industrial complex has got to take less. A 3% haircut year after year is the way to go with the military. There has to be a way to refocus their efforts toward something other than nukes and missiles and fighting ships. Imagine the Cruise Ships, the oil carriers, the container ships Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock (They have a different name, but they built the Nimitz Class, perhaps their finest work) could build instead of building Ford Class aircraft carriers, which are junk.
He’s on a tight budget and has to live within it. He saved me a lot of money elsewhere so this life lesson/experience is mostly worth it. He’s had a few jobs but nothing steady. He’s learning to survive and the value of a buck, hopefully one day he’ll flourish. My regret is that I can’t do more to help him, not with money but with connections and such…but as I said he’s got to make his own way.

Humankind has gone through very long periods of time where there was literally no significant technological advancement. What if we are entering such a period? Suppose no matter how many processors or memory you add to your IPhone, it does little more for your life than the one you bought 20 years ago? What happens to our consumer oriented economy?

The NKVD was about 40% Jewish around the time of the Holodomor. Not a majority but a strong plurality because the rest were a hodgepodge of Russians, Georgians, Tatars and other groups.

Solzhenitsyn lied a lot, so I’d take his words with a grain of salt. Can’t say nothing like that ever happened, though – very possibly it did. Yes, that is true. I forgot that part. That is another big reason for the censorship of the book. He mentions the widespread evacuations of East Europeans Jews before/during WWII to all parts of the Soviet Union which greatly lessens the big H’s possible numbers. He also mentions the evacuations of Jews from Shetls in the Pale during World War I by the Russians. The Russians did this because they feared that the Jews would be pro-German and help the Germans in the war. These evacuations scattered the Jews to all areas of Russia. Solzhenitsyn notes that it created the possibility for Jews to dominate the Bolshevik Revolution all over Russia. These two huge evacuations of Jews mentioned in his book, one, during the WWI by the Russians and the other one, before/during WWII by the Soviet Union messes up the numbers of Jews in Eastern Europe for the big H. Solzhenitsyn never denies or questions the numbers of the big H in this book, perhaps he does not want to go into Santa Claus territory. The Big H is the Santa Claus for adults in our time, so he does not dare to dig in that ground. He left it as the west/Soviet Union says it happened in the book.

That was not my point at all. I was stating why “The 200 years together” book by Solzhenitsyn was censored in the English speaking world. It wasn’t about Judaic participation in the Bolshevik Revolution. It was because the book showed that Jews were not victims during 200 years of Russian rule as is stated endless in our MSM. The Judaic participation in the Bolshevik Revolution was not what I was pointing at. As I stated, it is commonly noted by many people that many Jews were involved in it. Another commenter noted another reason for the censorship of this book, it is Solzhenitsyn’s telling about the massive evacuations of Jews from Eastern Europe before and during WWII to areas deeper in the Soviet Union. These massive evacuations would greatly lessen the number count of Jews that were under National Socialist control. Thus it would greatly lessen any Big H count. Also, the book noted that the Russians moved many Jews from near the front lines during WWI. They did so because they thought the Jews would be pro-German and help the Germans. This would also lessen the Jewish count for the Big H, since the Jews would be further in the Soviet Union and outside the area that the National Socialists would control.
In no particular order:
1) Street demonstrations (in major cities) that are too large for security forces to handle. Invading government offices and news broadcasters.
2) Street demonstrations met by security force violence, getting a violent response and spiraling out of control.
3) Necessary use of the military with loyalty to who?
4) US stumbles into a war with Russia or China.
5) A military coup.
6) An elite “Civil War” where different factions fight for power.
7) An elite “National Emergency” regime (i.e. dictatorship) that can’t consolidate power.
8) Locality. Various states de facto secede from the union.
9) Growing random suicidal attacks on elites.
10) Collapse of the dollar and hyperinflationary chaos.
11) Growing violence of Antifa vs. Nationalist militias.
Once the situation shows signs of running out of control, I believe that the 0,1% will exit the US quite fast, heading for Europe (London), Israel, Australia, New Zealand and South America and take their capital with them – which of course will mean a total economic collapse.
The 0.1 % already have their dual-citizenship-John Derbyshire noted that New Zealand was popular for tech millionaires, who are in the know.
