SANTA BARBARA, Calif., Jan. 5 (AP)—A 25‐year‐old graduate student was formally charged with murder today in the fatal stabbing last Satur day of Robert B. Sinclair, a re tired theatrical director.

Billy McCoy Hunter of the University of California at Santa Barbara had been ar rested Saturday at the Sinclair home by the Sheriff's deputies, who were summoned by Mrs. Sinclair.

Mr. Sinclair, 64 years old, had been repeatedly stabbed in the chest. Two neighbors said they had been called by Mrs. Sinclair and had found the stu dent standing in a hallway of the house, where they held him for the police.
