Cote d’Ivoire to chair UNSC in December

Cote d’Ivoire will take the presidency of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) from 1 December 2018  to 31 December 2018, the Ivorian government announced on Thursday, 21 November 2018, after a Cabinet meeting chaired by President Alassane Ouattara.

For the period 2018-2019, and since 1 January 2018, Cote d’Ivoire became a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council for the third time in its history.

“In accordance with the priorities of the Ivorian mandate, this presidency will focus on sharing experiences in UN Peacekeeping Operations, as well as on the issue of stability and economic development,” the statement added.

In this perspective, a high-level presidential debate is scheduled for 5 December 2018  at the United Nations on the theme: ‘Post-conflict economic reconstruction; pillar for the consolidation and sustainability of peace and a factor for stability and security.’

On the following day, a high-level ministerial debate was also scheduled on the theme: ‘Greater involvement of states and sub-regional and regional organisations for more effective conflict prevention and resolution, in close cooperation with the United Nations.’

In addition to these high-level discussions, the programme of work will include briefings on the consolidation and sustainability of international peace and security.
