South Korea deploys KDX-2 destroyer to Ghana on rescue mission

The Republic of Korea Navy (RoKN) has deployed a KDX-2-class guided-missile destroyer to Ghana on a possible hostage rescue mission after three South Korean fishermen were kidnapped while at sea on 26 March.

According to a report carried by official news agency Yonhap on 1 April, the destroyer, RoKS Mun mu Daewang (976), was operating in the Gulf of Aden as part of South Korea’s contribution to an international counter-piracy effort in the Gulf of Aden.

The destroyer is currently on the way to West Africa with a detachment of 30 special warfare personnel from the service’s Special Warfare Brigade, and a Super Lynx helicopter equipped with 12.7 mm machine guns.
