VOLUNTEER POSITIONS

If you answered YES to any of these questions, then volunteering at the       New Haven Museum may be just right for you!  Volunteers are integral to the success of the NHM, without them many of the museum’s daily activities could not take place.  Some positions are on the front lines, working with visitors of all ages and assisting the NHM staff with special events and programs.  Other positions are more behind the scenes in administration, research and site management projects.  All positions are essential to the success of the organization!

A wide variety of volunteer positions are available in all departments of the New Haven Museum.  Time commitments and skills vary with each position or project.  Please see below for a summary of available opportunities, then fill out our volunteer form and send it in.  If you would like to make an appointment to find out more, please contact:

General Operations

Museum Membership: help maintain and increase membership by assisting with mailings, data entry, member drives and events.

Marketing and Publicity: assist with distributing press releases, PSAs, flyers and other publicity materials; man informational booths at fairs and community events

Visitor Services

Greeter/Admissions & Museum Shop: staff the admissions desk at the museum entrance; welcome visitors and provide a brief orientation to the museum and library offerings; answer the phone; handle Museum Shop sales and service.

Program Hospitality: assist staff with museum programs, managing check-in for participants; refreshments; staffing the Museum Shop.

Whitney Library

Cataloger: assist with updating the library catalog

Library Assistant: help staff with daily library duties

Museum Collections

Collections Management: assist with cataloguing, research, and collections maintenance activities.

Exhibitions: assist staff with research, gallery preparation and installation of exhibitions.

Education

Museum Teacher: teach workshops for school children, assist with youth programs during summers, vacation weeks and afterschool; lead tours and give outreach lectures for adults.

Program Development: assist with research of content for programs; audience development strategies.

Buildings and Grounds

Heritage Angel: assist with significant building improvement projects including lighting, plastering, painting, glazing, electrical and plumbing needs.

Landscape: assist with plantings and maintenance of lawn areas and creating an attractive facade through plantings and exterior arrangements

 


INTERNSHIPS AND WORK-STUDY OPPORTUNITIES

  • Do you want to meet new people?
  • Are you interested in the local region and want to learn more?

New Haven Museum can offer all of these options for enthusiastic, interested students. Internship and work-study positions are available for the semester, year or summer.  Students work in all areas of the museum and assist with a variety of projects.  Times and days of the week are usually flexible.
