I don't ask for donations or crowdfunding on any platform. If that ever changes, it'll be incredibly obvious. If someone's asking you for money or suggesting that you can donate to me, it's not true and you should stay well clear.

So if you thought you'd donated to me through Brave, the money (or their pseudo-money) will not reach me, and Brave's terms say they may choose to just keep it themselves. It looks like they're 'providing this service' for every creator on every platform. No opt-in, no consent.

I did ask Brave how keeping profiles on untold numbers of people and assigning donations to them without consent complied with GDPR, at which point the person talking to me stopped replying to emails.

If you would like to donate this Christmas, then please send something to the Against Malaria Foundation. They're one of the most effective charities in the world, and a cause I support!https://www.againstmalaria.com/

I agree, this is creepy and misleading.pic.twitter.com/hRyorRPx2n

Blimey, I hadn't seen that bit of UI. That's awful.

It looks like criminal "passing off" to me.

There's no way that isn't blatant fraud. Tom, that's material for your forthcoming legal complaint. And possibly security fraud, given the ICO was on the good old 2017 "unregistered security" model.

Brave as in the browser, or something else? How can I get in touch with this company?
-
Yep, then. I've been going back and forth on Twitter for a while (see thread) and eventually just gave up and filed a GDPR right-to-be-forgotten request with them. We'll see how that goes.

They don’t have a terrible idea. Their browser comes with a built in ad-blocker, and they keep track of what websites you visit. You can give them money and they’ll allocate it divided between the websites you visit. It’s very sketchy that don’t provide an opt-out for creators.
-
Opt out?!? Accepting donations for someone without that person asking you to do it is fraud.

The entire process is automated, if you have a Twitter or YouTube channel, these guys are taking donations for you and waiting for you to claim the wallet. You guys are going to look back on this and kick yourselves. At least research the tech or encourage others to 1st
-
It's a great idea but should be opt-in only. People can buy BATs for their money thinking it'll support their favourite content creators and never know that the money only ends up at Brave. This would've happened to me if I hadn't asked Tom whether he gets anything out of it.
-
That's fair, I think donators should opt-in to the model they want. Ex if recipient isnt verified then send and return if not claimed after 3 months, or send and donate to charity, or immediately bounce back, this is new territory we're stepping into. Time will tell who is right
