DETROIT, April 1 (AP)—TheDetroit Red Wings of the National Hockey League announced today that they would move to Pontiac, Mich., starting with the 1978‐79 season. The Red Wings will play in a $15 million arena to be built across from the Pontiac Silverdome, the home of the Detroit Lions football team.

The announcement by the Red Wings had been expected for months. The City of Detroit recently made a bid to move the Red Wings to a proposed $22.5 million municipal downtown arena. But the plan was rejected by the team's management.
