Atlanta & Charlotte Air-Line Railway The Atlanta & Charlotte Air-Line Railway resulted from an 1877 reorganization of the Atlanta & Richmond Air-Line Railway. In 1881 the A&CAL was leased to the Richmond & Danville Railroad. In 1894, along with the R&D itself, it became a part of the Southern Railway. Note: At the time, "Air-Line" referred to a direct route, or at least a route more direct than that of any competitor.
