'My life today has ups and downs, but overall, I’m a lucky man.'

Sawa, who's been seen on shows such as Somewhere Between, Nikita and The Odyssey, and in movies like Final Destination and Casper, told US last year that he left show business about 15 years ago for a five-year stretch, and was uncertain he'd return.

'Most of the time, [I] didn't know whether I was going to come back or not.'

Sawa, who has two kids with wife Dawni -son Hudson, four, and daughter Scarlett, two - opened up about the professional turmoil that led to the interruption in his career, as he 'was just burnt out.'

'I had done a series of four or five indie movies that I wasn't necessarily proud of,' he said. 'Some were horror movies. After Final Destination everybody wanted me to do horror movies and some weren't as good as others.'

The actor said he'd been 'brought back into the business by accident' via a mix-up that inadvertently jump-started his passion for performing.

'Somebody at my agency didn't get the memo that I quit and sent me an audition and I put myself on tape and that was it. I didn't get it. It was for the Max Payne movie with Mark Wahlberg,' Sawa told the magazine. 'But I did really well and the casting director wanted to meet me and I did. I thought, "You know what, this is what I love. This is what I really want to do."

'So I don't know why I stepped away in the first place.'
