A little about us
The Mountain Times is a weekly community newspaper, which means that it covers local events in a way that’s different from a large metropolitan or regional daily. The aim is to inform readers about their friends and neighbors, about events, local government, schools, sports and local business.
In addition to communicating local news, we seek to create marketing platforms that effectively reach a large community audience for our advertisers. The Mountain Times also employs award-winning graphic designers, who greatly enhance the paper’s design and our clients branding.

Our History
The Mountain Times is, and has always been, a family-owned independent newspaper located on Route 4. Founded in 1971 by Ed Pickett as The Killington-Pico Paper, the publication had its original office on Route 4 in Mendon. After a few years, Pickett sold the paper to Andrew Neisner, who moved the offices east to Route 4 in Killington, across from the Post Office. Neisner then sold it to Fred and Olga Straka, who moved the offices a block to the east. In 1986 Royal and Zip Barnard bought The Mountain Times and eventually built new offices just a bit further east on the “Killington flats,” still on Route 4. The Barnards owned and operated the newspaper for 25 years before selling it to the Lynn family, who own eight other newspapers in the state.
Polly Lynn, editor & co-publisher, is a fifth generation newspaper publisher, she and her partner Jason Mikula, ad manager & co-publisher, took over operations of The Mountain Times just after Tropical Storm Irene decimated the region in the fall of 2011.
Publication requirements
The editorial staff is wholly separate from the newspaper’s advertising staff. The newsroom seeks to accurately report the news events mentioned above. The sales staff seeks to help clients effectively market their business with creative and effective marketing solutions, through print and digital advertising. News is printed at no charge, while advertising is purchased. News submissions are always welcomed and will be printed and edited at the editor’s discretion. The only way to guarantee publication is through paid advertising.
