I was a Peace Corps Volunteer in Ghana. I could not agree with this post more, except perhaps that the situation is worse than described.

In judging everyone has their own standards and perspectives. But if one attends enough or sees enough films, one can may conclude based on their standards, and perspectives there’s a film that stands as the best.

I thought it was fair game to remake Creature of the Black Lagoon with the antagonist as the protagonist, all well and fine. But the choice to have relations — over the top – even if to make a point. And even with that, the film itself was not all that compelling in too many ways predictable with villainous tropes and innocent misfits —

I have not seen an Oscar awards ceremony for many years, in fact I probably have never seen one, but might have seen some clips, perhaps. Why would one want to? Since I do not work in the movie or entertainment business, I have no idea what constitutes a good acting performance from a technical point of view–all I can do is say that I kind of like a certain actor in a certain role, like Julie Andrews in Mary Poppins, or Tony Hopkins in Silence of the Lambs, but I am certainly no judge of whether they were better or worse that other actors in popular movies of the same year. For all I know they may have forgotten their lines and required hundreds of takes.

In the modern US you are white if you look white (-ish) and say you are. The simple standard for ANY race is, “what does person X look like” and what would most people SAY they look like? Social standing and status as well as culture can play a part (Mariah Carey would definitely be considered white in Brazil). But overall, if you are Felix Trinidad from PR, 99 percent of the world knows you are a black male, whether you are Latino or not. Just as 99 percent of the world knows Andy Garcia is white, Shakira is White/Arab, and Penelope Cruz is White/Moor. People sort by the obvious, just as while beauty is in the eye of the beholder, symmetry, hair quality, height, all that, can be a universal standard to a degree.

People like to point out some exception, “but muh Fins have Chino eyes and white skin…but muh neighbor’s Mexican with red hair”. IF SOMEONE LOOKS WHITE they ARE WHITE. Not just skin, facial features, hair texture, body type, etc. Same with black or anything else. Yellow and Red exist as colors regardless of Orange in between.

I’m just waiting for some Hollywood figure to declare that he/she is done with acting for good, and will devote their life to something like:
- running a charter school to defy teacher unions
- starting a business that gets the working class working again
- developing a food co-op

I’m not holding my breath.

Great comment. Without whitey, this computer, movies, none of the electronic world would have been created. Those no good whiteys came from Europe-they were responsible for giving us all kinds of electronic gadgets, and they gave us all kinds of medical breakthroughs.
This denigration and hate of whitey that is ongoing in the USA is completely ridiculous and insane. None of us would be talking about any of this without the genius of the whites who have invented darn near everything that involves electricity and modern medicine.

I was always part of the lower middle class and poor whites until I got educated- thanks to whites.
I served in Marines in late 60s- I got along well with whites and blacks and all kinds despite the Corps being a pretty miserable experience.
I used benefits given to me by a decent government which has been slowly eroded by hate merchants over the past 20 plus years with the worst hate going on from 2008 to 2016.
I feel that the election loss of Hilary Clinton gave goodhearted Americans of any color and especially the trampled upon whites a new lease on life.

Sounds good to some people. 500 years ago most of N.Europe believed in saints, miracles, witches, purgatory and heaven. I don’t know if any of you remember Eddie and the Cruisers, a silly little 80s movie about a fictional rock band and its “troubled genius” frontman. Blah blah blah.

About a year after it came out, the theme song came on the radio at work and one of my co-workers told me how much she liked the Cruisers and the documentary about them. I had to break it to her that “On the Darkside” was by Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes, and the movie was pure fiction.

She denied it, and became quite upset. I mean, one step from “little girl sobbing and stamping her feet” unhinged, and we’re talking about a middle-aged woman. Granted, she wasn’t especially bright, but I wouldn’t say she was any more foolish or crazy than half the population.

Once I realized her unreasonable commitment to her delusion, I backed out of the conversation as gracefully as I could. Who cares, right?
