BATON ROUGE -- LSU junior outfielder Jared Mitchell was selected Tuesday by the Chicago White Sox in the first round of the Major League Baseball Draft.

Mitchell, a native of New Iberia, La., is the first LSU player chosen in the first round since infielder Aaron Hill by Toronto in 2003.

In the second round, LSU second baseman DJ LeMahieu was selected 79th overall by the Chicago Cubs.

Mitchell, who is No. 2 in the Southeastern Conference this season with 35 stolen bases, is hitting .325 (66-for-203)  with 12 doubles, four triples, nine homers, 60 runs and 43 RBI. Mitchell, who has walked 52 times, leads the Tigers with a .471 on-base percentage.

Mitchell, also a wide receiver for the LSU football team, was drafted for the second time in his career. He was selected in the 10th round of the 2006 draft by the Minnesota Twins after his senior season at Westgate High School.

“Mitchell certainly was one of the more intriguing college bats as draft day approached. Playing for a high-powered LSU team, he showed the exciting athleticism that made him a two-sport standout, with plus speed and flashes of raw power. Whoever takes him -- and it could be in the first round -- will likely see him as a centerfielder who will steal bases and hit for power in the future.”

Mitchell and the top-ranked Tigers will continue their preparations for the College World Series with a workout Wednesday afternoon in Alex Box Stadium. The Tigers will depart for Omaha, Neb. on Thursday morning and open CWS play at 6 p.m. Saturday versus Virginia in Rosenblatt Stadium.

Signee Drafted

One of LSU's signees for 2010, Texas High School outfielder Slade Heathcott was selected six picks after Mitchell, No. 29 overall, by the New York Yankees.
