The script (by Joe Penhall, based on a magazine article by Mark Seal) runs in fits and starts, but the camerawork from Danny Cohen keeps the mood lively during any lulls.
King of Thieves is a disappointing mess that lacks both suspense and a clear identity. Not even the occasional joy of seeing these fine actors riff with one another can save it.
With a cast this rich in experience and history and a fact-based heist of such enormous scale, King of Thieves sounds like a shake-and-bake classic in the making, which makes its pedestrian execution all the more puzzling to behold.
If only this post-heist section had more tension, suspense and surprise, "King" could have been a real contender.
Calling King Of Thieves the British answer to Gotti is harsh, obviously. But honestly? It's not much of a stretch.
For all its flaws - and they are legion - "King of Thieves" wraps you in a fuzzy blanket of familiarity.
The characters are well worth spending time with as they amble toward disaster.
Based on a true story, this movie about "old codger" criminals feels a little dry/routine, but the great cast still strikes enough sparks to make it worth a look.
King of Thieves should have had the robbery at the forefront, then the fallout between the criminals secondary. That's a difficult choice with a cast of this caliber.
