The 10 best Roma v Juventus matches ever

The 164th contest between Juventus and Roma will take place on Sunday in Turin but what have been the best games between the two sides? Here’s our Top 10 countdown…

10. Juventus 0-1 Roma 1967-68

Roma were flying high after an excellent start to the season and paid a visit to Heriberto Herrera's Juventus. The Giallorossi silenced the home stadium with a gritty performance and sent more than 2000 Roma supporters who had made the trip to Turin into jubilation. Fabio Capello scored the winning goal fifteen minutes into the game, slotting home a Giugliano Taccola assist. The joy among the supporters was so great that a huge crowd greeted the players at the train station on their return to the capital.   

9. Roma 1-0 Juventus 1949-50

As the magazine Calcio Illustrato described it at the time, Roma's “only tactic was heart and their only weapon desire” when beating Juventus at the Stadio Nazionale. The victory banished the spectre of relegation and brought great delight to the fans. The only goal of the contest was scored by Adriano Zecca early on, after which Fulvio Bernardini's men defended their lead with guts and character to take home a precious win.

8. Juventus 1-3 Roma 1935-36

The Roma side coached by Luigi Barbesino pulled off a remarkable feat in picking up their first-ever away victory against Juventus, beginning their assault on the top of the table in the process – Roma would end up in second place one point behind Bologna. The Giallorossi began the contest on the front foot with goals from Renato Cattaneo and Dante Di Benedetti. The Bianconeri bounced back through Guglielmo Gabetto, but Di Benedetti killed off the game after the break with his second finish of the day.

7. Roma 2-0 Juventus 1998-99

Zdenek Zeman's Roma brought joy to Giallorossi fans with a 2-0 victory at the Stadio Olimpico, filled to the rafters for the occasion. Paulo Sergio opened the scoring with a volley after a superb Totti assist before Vincent Candela made certain of victory, beating the onrushing Angelo Peruzzi after a wonderful solo run.

6. Juventus 2-2 Roma 1983-84

A memorable performance from Roberto Pruzzo whose 90th minute goal handed champions Roma a deserved draw. The Giallorossi took the lead in the second half at the Stadio Comunale in Turin thanks to a precise diagonal finish from Bruno Conti. Moments later, two quick-fire goals from Michel Platini and Domenico Penzo pushed the Bianconeri into the lead. However, Juventus hadn't reckoned on Pruzzo popping up with a superbly-taken late equaliser that has gone down in the club's history.  

5. Juventus 1-2 Roma 2009-10

Claudio Ranieri's Roma won in the last second at the Stadio Olimpico in Turin thanks to a header from John Arne Riise, who immediately ran over to celebrate in front of the delirious Roma fans. The Norwegian's goal completed the comeback, after Francesco Totti's penalty – his first strike away against Juventus – had brought his team level following Alessandro Del Piero's opener. 

4. Roma 4-0 Juventus 2003-04

Roma were inspired by the spectacular duo of Francesco Totti and Antonio Cassano who cut through the Juventus defence like a hot knife through butter, humiliating the Old Lady and earning a deserved 4-0 win. Olivier Dacourt got the ball rolling with a right-footed shot from the edge of the area before Totti doubled the Giallorossi advantage from the penalty spot. Cassano put the game to bed after the restart, beating Gigi Buffon first with his right and then with his head. There were no ifs or buts for Marcello Lippi's Juve on a night when they were quite simply silenced.

3. Roma 3-0 Juventus 1985-86

The splendid choreography at the Stadio Olimpico decked out in yellow and red was the backdrop to a wonderful performance from Sven Goran Eriksson's Roma. Hard on Juventus's heels in the league, the Giallorossi outclassed the Bianconeri to win 3-0. Francesco Graziani got the party started with a header, which was doubled shortly afterwards by Roberto Pruzzo who celebrated by ripping his shirt off below the Curva Sud. Finally, Toninho Cerezo put the game to bed on a memorable occasion.

2. Roma 5-0 Juventus 1930-31 

Herbert Burgess's Roma put in a legendary performance to humiliate league-leaders Juventus, who were on course to win their second title in a row. The Giallorossi ended up in second place that season but smashed the Bianconeri with goals from Nicolas Lombardo, Rodolfo Volk, Cesare Augusto Fasanelli and two from Fulvio Bernardini. The defeat was such a shock that it inspired a film with the unforgettable title "5-0", which even featured cameo appearances from some Roma players.

1. Juventus 2-2 Roma 2000-01

Fabio Capello's Roma side set out their stall as serious Scudetto contenders with a last-minute comeback against Carlo Ancelotti's Juventus at the Stadio Delle Alpi. Goals from Alessandro Del Piero and Zinedine Zidane handed the home team a 2-0 lead before Hidetoshi Nakata reduced the deficit with a bullet from outside the area. In the dying moments of the game, a Vincenzo Montella tap-in sent the 12,000 travelling Roma fans into ecstasy.
