27 September: Public lecture “Genetically modified products”
|
Should we be afraid of GMO? Is everything that we hear about it or read on the Internet true?
And where is the border line between traditional selection methods and genetic engineering?
Dr. Joachim Messing, Professor of Molecular Biology, will help clarify questions that alarm many people.
Nongovernmental organizations, media, and the Internet generously present information about genetic modification of agricultural crops and sharply differentiate between traditional and genetic engineering methods of improving their characteristics. Joachim Messing believes that such information is often taken out of context and is flawed from the scientific standpoint.
Joachim Messing is positively sure that now is the time for everybody to understand that humanity will not be able to survive without revolutionary changes in agriculture. Only such changes will allow solving the wide range of global problems caused by population growth, climate change, scarce water and land resources, rising fuel prices, and increased sensitivity to allergens.
