Uninhibited and naughty, Kadhalum Kadanthu Pogum is an enjoyable comedy that has enough frenzied moments to keep you in your seats.

It’s been ages since we have seen a classy rom-com in Tamil cinema. No, we are not talking about the regular comedies in Tamil cinema with a love track, colorful visuals and soothing melodies. But here is a film where you instantly fall in love with the protagonists; they are not perfect but real with sharp performances.

Kathir (Vijay Sethupathi) is a wannabe rowdy, whose only aim is to run a bar on his own. He is just back from five years of prison life and it was for his area councilor, who promises him a good life. Then, we have Yazhini (Madonna Sebastian) who loses her IT job during recession and due to financial crisis, she stays in the small flat opposite Kathir.

The rest of the film is all about how these two people with drastically different dreams gel with ease and develop a liking for each other…

Although Kadhalum Kadanthu Pogum is a remake of My Dear Desparado (Korean), Nalan’s writing is extraordinary that the film is filled with local flavors and lively characters. For instance, the scene where Madonna eases the tense situation by taking a selfie and proposes with a tight hug and a gift, are simply superb.

Not just writing, the slow moving screenplay can be ignored for the ingenious performances of Vijay Sethupathi and Madonna.

If the first half of the movie belongs to Madonna, Vijay Sethupathi leads the show in second half.  He clearly enjoys himself in a part with no star trappings and you simply cannot take your eyes off him. The beauty is that both Madonna and Vijay Sethupathi has played their parts convincingly with great elan.

Santhosh Narayanan elevates each and every scene with his soulful score. The sound designers also deserve big applause; the climax scene with whistle sound at the background evokes a big smile and ensures that audiences leave the hall with complete satisfaction.

Dinesh Krishnan’s scintillating visuals and Leo John Paul’s apt cuts only enhance all the above said positives.

Overall,  Kadhalum Kadanthu Pogum is a classy rom-com, which can be watched for the superb writing and phenomenal performances.
