Rep. Maxine Waters (D-Calif.) excoriated Americans who support constructing a border wall in a speech given against President Donald Trump in Los Angeles.

The outspoken foe of the president said that anyone who supports a border wall is not a patriot.

"This president is trying to keep a campaign promise to all of those people that he swore he would build a wall!" she told her audience.

"And those people who want the wall are not patriots," she claimed, "they are not people who love this country, they are not people who stand up for what's right!"

Waters was speaking in front of Los Angeles City Hall on Presidents Day in a rally meant to protest the declaration of a national emergency by Trump in order to begin construction on the border wall.

"And so we've got to resist this president and this so-called national emergency!" she added to great applause.

A poll in early January showed that 43 percent of Americans surveyed believed that a border wall was important — meaning Waters was impugning the patriotism of millions of Americans.

The declaration of a national emergency has been controversial, with many critics of the president warning that it sets a precedent for abuse of the executive branch by future Democratic commanders-in-chief.

The House Judiciary Committee has already announced an investigation into the constitutionality of the proclamation, while California led a coalition of 15 states that entered into a lawsuit against the administration over the order.
