THQ Nordic holding an AMA on... 8chan (UP3: CEO points to Twitter apology as final word on the matter)

I think it's important to do some more research into this "MARK" character. From what little I've gathered he's the leader of 8chan, but to find out more I'll have to dig deeper.

Honestly, I'm really scared to go down there. But else I'll be stuck with these questions for the rest of my life.

Wish me luck.
Those questions ain’t worth it, Mazinger.

Would Boss Borot subject himself to that filth of a website and risk ending up on some watchlist in the process? No. Do what Boss Borot would have done, always!

Just what the industry needs more people getting fired. Good luck PR manager you’re gonna need a lot in the future, the mob will ensure you never find work again.

Ansolutely fucking shocking they didn’t think about what that site was. They’ll claim ignorance, but I think they went for the edge lord route viral marketing and all that.

I hope they show this in universities on how not to get PR
I'm pretty sure a google search showing his record of reaching out to pedophiles will ensure he never finds work again long before "the mob".

At the very least he should be fired for gross incompetence, this isn’t about an internet mob this is about someone who was hired for a specific thing not being able to do that specific thing.
I’m all for him getting fired, dude failed the first step in his job, so absolutely get rid.

I do however not like the mob FIRE HIM mentality that they jump to say.
Let the guy know he fucked up in a more constructive way that’s all.

8ch was created as an offshoot after 4ch started banning discussion about "gamergate". Kinda makes sense that THQ would hold an AMA there after they bought Warhorse Studios, a developer that created a game with the explicit aim of being "anti-gamergate".
Inaccurate. 8chan was basically the home of banned 4chan child pedos. They were tiny but blew up in size thanks to gamergate and 4chan not tolerating all of their fuckery because gamergaters who preferred the 4chan format needed a home and basically was ok teaming up with a pedo ring.

Wouldn't the AMA have to be ok'd by upper management? I can't imagine a PR person could make such a decision by them selfs. I'm curious what the next talking point is going to be for them.
From what I gather... this IS upper management.

Give the guys some slack, he's from Austria, not the US, they don't really know what racism is over ther-oh

There was also that one guy from a couple of decades ago...

Yes, the mob of people who don't support child pornography and nazism. Come on, dude.

I guess? But they were obviously aware of the nature of the site.
The amazing thing is the guy answering questions didn't do a google search. I can entertain the idea that one PR guy set it all up then read aloud the questions to the person answering them. So the guy answering the questions never actually looked at the site, he just answered what the PR dude was reading to him. That's like the best-case scenario for THQ but it still boggles the mind that no one else in the loop googled 8chan. Good fucking luck recovering from this THQ

At this point I just want to know the motivation behind this. Prank, honest mistake, THQ is full of nazis and pedos?

The guy who approved and help organize this is Philipp Brock who is literally the head of PR at THQ Nordic. This isn't some subordinate getting over his head.

Reinhard Pollice (Director of business and production development) and Phillip Brock (head of PR & Marketing) is pretty high up the chain.

I feel you.

Quick question, because I think I read it before in your article and I think it's gone now: You made the point that Brock made posts in the AMA that fit right in the crowd. Does that apply to Pollice too? Or was that just people impersonating him?
It's hard to tell. I am not exactly clear how 8chan modding/special privileges work. It does appear the ##reporter bit is supposed to signify a special account, the people flagged as participating in the AMA, but is that something handled on the users end, so maybe they forgot to flag it? Is that all admin-driven? Either way, the ability for the site to so quickly attribute awful things to your name is one of a billion reasons why this was an awful idea.

I legitimately didn't know about 8chan until this thread, think whatever you want. I knew of 4chan and it's awfulness, and I knew there were other 'chans' but I had no idea the terrible shit hole that it was until today, and apparently it's the biggest one? Hell I'm even learning new terms for the types of pedo shit they have, and I don't know how I would have stumbled across those terms otherwise.

Not everyone keeps their finger on the pulse of the internet. But as everyone is keen to point out, it doesn't take much to notice its a hell hole.
Nah that's fair, I shouldn't cast the net that wide but I think a lot of people will know of these sites and feign ignorance.

I will say that I don't know how this PR guy claims he didn't know what the site was when literally five seconds on it would give you a good idea. Did he just stumble on it? how? it's completely ridiculous.

How about you try using your employer's public media account to have a chat with pedophiles and nazis. Tell us how it goes.

I don't know if this is something THQNordic can even come back from in their current state.

Presumably, one dude who did the legwork of this "stunt" is going to be the sacrificial lamb and be quietly dismissed is what the current gameplan is; it's probably better however to virtually purge the entire PR / marketing department and start from scratch, to ensure not even a hint of bullshit like this ever happens again within the company if it survives this fiasco. Then there's the part of me that thinks they should do all of that and also just re-brand outright, since their image is now stained with things ethically and morally lower than dinosaur shit.
Eh, I think they could wash themselves of this shit but some heads would definitely have to roll very publicly.

They really hate ResetEra huh
Imagine having such a fucked up moral compass and let's be honest, being so maladjusted as a direct result of no identity aside from playing video games and watching anime that the idea that Era is collectively bothered by anything let alone a company associating with a google-blacklisted website that had to change hosts multiple times as a direct result of suspected child pornography is more an affront to your sensibilities than A)the existence of the website in the first place and B)a prominent publisher signal boosting said website

THQ do the right thing and fire everyone involved in this, get a new PR team and make a sizable donation to child protection charities and anti-racism charities. I think that's the only way to truly make amends for this.
But they won't do it. They'll just stick to their shitty twitter apology like CD Projekt.

What? No. 8chan existed way before Gamergate was a thing.

But yes, clearly many people at THQ Nordic are highly supportive of GG nazis. I'm done with any games even remotely related to them. Then again, not exactly a major inconvenience for me.
OK technically it was created ~10months before gamegate (hardly "way before") but it's significant userbase came about after the 4ch "exodus". 8ch would be a dead board if not for gamergate.

I’m pretty sure 8 was around as a forum for child exploitation for like a decade before GG.
Well you'd be wrong. 8ch was created in October of 2013, gamergate was August 2014.

Inaccurate. 8chan was basically the home of banned 4chan child pedos. They were tiny but blew up in size thanks to gamergate and 4chan not tolerating all of their fuckery because gamergaters who preferred the 4chan format needed a home and basically was ok teaming up with a pedo ring.
8ch was created because of the strangle hold 4ch had on boards. 8ch was different to 4ch in that anyone could create a board, that's what attracted people to it. It was really lax moderation wise in general and given the userbase of chans in general then some of that stuff did slip through but 8ch always had a global rule against it. 8ch was tiny before gamergate, that's a fact. It's main userbase is there because of it and it'd have died at the wayside like other alternate chans if not for gamergaye.

no, 8chan existed well before that. gamergate moving there just gave it a bump in userbase.

Different emotions being:

"Hmm my nazi friends seem to enjoy me chilling with them in public on here, but HOLY SHIT REGULAR HUMAN BEINGS ARE SUDDENLY SCREAMING AT ME WHAT IS GOING ON????????????? ~howcouldthishappen~"

Eh, I think they could wash themselves of this shit but some heads would definitely have to roll very publicly.
In a vacuum? Sure. In the world we live in where they have purchased openly pro-Gamergate studios? Nah, fam.

Ok, so how am I supposed to believe this went down at THQ Nordic?

PR Guy 1: Hey, let's do an AMA on 8Chan!
PR Guy 2: AMA, sounds great, but wait, what's 8Chan?
PR Guy 1: Isn't that a message board like Reddit?
PR Guy 3: Nah, you mean 4Chan!
PR Guy 1: Ah, whatever something like that, guy contacted me somehow or somehow this page magically opened on my PC, no clue, you don't need every detail, right?
PR Guy 2: Yeah, no one cares, it's the Internet, something like 4Chan, sounds great for me, boss?
Head of PR: What? AMA on 8Chan? No clue what it is and I don't research stuff, you guys know what your doing, right? Sure, go ahead, announce it on our official Twitter channel, I'll answer stuff as well! Great idea, guys!
PR intern: Äh guys, did you check the board or Google before? Does anyone actually know what 8Chan is?
Head of PR: Ah, who cares, something like 4Chan, we'll just add something on Twitter like "no clue why we are doing it, but here's the link to the AMA"
PR Team: Well, that sounds like a great plan!

Not to mention the likes and initial details in their Tweet and responses in the AMA from the PR Director.

I'm howling here.

Overwhelmed? You didn't get pushed into the pit, queen. You happily walked into it.

And the fact he felt the need to state he isn't a white supremacist or into child porn says so fucking much. You're not what festers on the site you chose to do?

I wonder what Mark thinks about the site.
