This hot dipped galvanised steel is treated with a pickling process first before passing into the galvanising kettle. This cleans the product and makes it ready to form a metallurgic bond with zinc.
This process is crucial in the making of this steel because it helps scrape off the scale that might contain rust, paint, oil, lubricants or other substances that might contaminate the steel in the future or reduce its life.
After undergoing the pickling process, it is treated with hydrochloric or sulphuric acid. This is known as ‘preparation’.
After the steel has cleared the preparation phase, it undergoes the fluxing stage.
Here, the steel is immersed in a solution of ammonium chloride and zinc in the presence of wetting agents.
The purpose of dipping the steel into this solution is to remove the oxide film that takes place on a highly reactive steel and restricts oxidation before galvanising takes place.
After this, the steel is pulled out and allowed to dry.
Here, the dried steel is passed into a molten zinc solution to form zinc-iron alloy layers on the steel. The trick is to leave the steel inside the solution until the temperature matches that of the molten zinc (445°C to 465°C). This allows a metallurgic bond to form.
The steel is kept dipped into the solution for a specific period of time depending on the amount and volume of the steel being galvanised.
The final product received is highly durable with both internal and external protection.
