PAP K3S
« on: October 04, 2018, 02:44:28 am »
Hello,
this may have been talked before but 2 years ago, PAP K3S got released.
It's basically a PAP K3 but with something in particular : a high resolution screen of 800x480 !
Another nice thing is that it does seem to run Dingux with a JZ4760.
That obviously makes it ideal for porting Visual novels or using it together with an image viewer or video player (albeit only RoQ is viable at that resolution on that SOC, but it's possible).

I've heard that some people compiled some software targeting this resolution but because the rootfs was only compiled for soft float and with very poor optimizations, it is very slow...
So like the Arcade Mini (which i'm working on), i would like to do something about it. :' )
Obviously it's no easy task upscaling to 800x480, if done well, the overhead should be fairly small or only slightly worse than what we deal with on the RS-97.

Btw, i've noticed that it's not that common unlike the stock PAP K3 or the K3 Plus... Plus, there are a lot of confusion around it.
Some people requested that i support the PAP K3S but without it, i can't do it.
And i'm a bit short on money i admit... So if anyone wants to order me one that would be nice :-*
EDIT: Thanks to you guys, someone bought one for me !

Anyone else actually owns this device ?

Will the s workings you do be compatible to the plus?

My arcade mini ports will work on the K3 Plus, which uses the same resolution. (480x272 if i'm not mistaken ?)
But only if they use my rootfs combined with the kernel in the device.... (It's not too complicated to do, i could in fact do it if i have a backup of the stock firmware of the K3 Plus)
That's in theory though... and it definitely won't work properly for the K3S due to differences in resolutions.

Some work can be shared among all the units though.

Just wanted to say that i got my PAP K3S yesterday. Many thanks to the donor !
However, i realized that the screws were too tiny for my screwdriver, so i ended up ordering them... I should get them in a day or two.

As for the original firmware itself, well i noticed the similarities between the Arcade Mini and the PAP K3S.
But the PAP K3S, other than having a high screen res, which is gorgeous i must add, also has a camera lol.
Of course, it's terrible.

So after i'm "done" with the arcade mini, i'll definitely look into this one.
I'll also try to get a custom kernel working on that thing, as steward's kernel seems to imply that it supports the LCD panel.
We will see i suppose but there are definitely rooms for improvements, especially the horrible sound in the og firmware.

That device was horrible to disassemble but thankfully, it only got minor exterior damage.
In hindsight, i probably should have done it via an external way but it would have taken me much longer to dump the required kernel.

Anyway, i did a quick port of GmenuNx and Quake (since both are fairly resolution-agnostic). GmenuNx will require some bigger icons though (or some scaling at least).
Quake runs ok now but it's maybe on the slow side. Maybe PGO can help but doing PGO for the demo only added like 1 fps to it.

The high resolution does have a few advantages though... For once, it has the same resolution as the Pandora. For two, that means some high-resolution games can be ported to it (Super Mario War, some ScummVM games etc...). Granted though, some of these games might not run smoothly... which is why i would like to experiment with static linking, if i can get the toolchain to work.

I'll get back to it after i'm done with the RS-97 and Arcade Mini.
As i suspected, the PAP KIII Plus will be able to use the same binaries as the Arcade Mini.

Just FYI, ladies and gentlemen, this thing is now widely available (at least on eBay) for only $35-40. Just search there for 'pap kiiis' (minus the punctuation, of course).

Hi! i have two questions about it.

1. Does it have a real 3.5" lcd screen size and 4:3 format ?  ( sometime its really just 3.0")

2. Can i get any pap kiii emulators working on it ? ( i had a pap kiii and gcw zero. now i have a rs-97 .

thanks for answer. i dont want to buy it for playing only with built in emulators!
