I appreciate your reply but it doesn't really address the question. I can understand why you'd root a phone if it has a terrible custom interface and you want to change it. But as for the GPD XD in specific, what does one gain by rooting it?

You need root to backup/restore your apps in system (Titanium Backup is the best imho) or for changing the CPU governor (for better performance/battery life).
You can install an ad-blocker for any apps or browsing that have ads.
Any app that accesses or manages any OS files will need root.

Of course, Android is designed to run without root access so you'll have a perfectly fine experience.
Titanium Backup is good for backing up the saves/settings from native Android games so you don't lose them if something goes wrong with the OS or you just want to reflash the firmware.

With tincore keymapper, there are options not available with the default keymapper.  For example, I can use the d-pad to play pac man 256, because it expects a gesture rather than touching a specific spot on the screen.  Tincore keymapper requires root.

tip - if you want the original firmware for happy chick (the only advantage really) you can get it for free from the official website for any android device, so for that you don't need to reflash http://www.happychick.hk/en.html

I don't know how to reflash sorry I never updated firmware on either Q9 or xD( my q9 is still on April firmware happily and XD on august no problems at all so no reason to upgrade for me ^^)

I agree - my XD works perfectly with it's December firmware as delivered. I'm not upgrading, installing launchers or rooting it. I can totally see why people do that (some launchers do look really nice and tinkering is fun), but I love the stability too much to futz with it, and my PS1 save states are too valuable. Open it, play a game, close it - that's all I do. Maybe there will be a firmware release in the future that will tickle my fancy, but until then I'm leaving well alone.

Does anyone have a fix for the GTA games on android?

Buttons abxy are reversed, ie the buttons each do the wrong thing.

Try using tincore keymapper- it offers a range of presets for the better-known gamepads-- chances are one of these presets will land you the right configuration for GTA. If not, you can also use tincore to manually reassign gamepad buttons and map them to your preference.

I reckon 3.4.2 is the latest issue-- links should be up in the "let's talk issues" thread.

In the past I had gone up to 3.3.8 and then been disappointed and reverted to 3.3.2 but I've just recently moved to the latest version and I quite like it so far. Nothing dramatically different, tbh.

Just note that the version 3.4.x do not come pre-rooted so you'd have to also d'load the SuperSU flashable from the same thread and install it via recovery- takes like a minute.

I used the batch tool so I'm not sure if the SD method will work although there's no real reason why it shouldn't

If you change the controller input to XBOX it will work as intended.
Not sure why the PS3 input does this on the XD as the DS3 works correctly on other android devices with SixAxis pair or whatever that app is called (been a long time since I used it).

Hi everybody,
big problem here.

Tried to update my GPD XD to the latest 3.4 directly from microSD but I think it's now half-bricked. Tha console is stuck on the boot logo screen :-(

Tried to boot it in loader mode (vol- + power as far as I know) but it failed anyway.

I downloaded ROckchip batch tool 1.8 and my OS is Windows 10. Any idea on how to recover the situation?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance
