I was in the market for a split shaft trimmer because I have a few lawns to edge, a number of hedges to trim and want greater reach and freedom from power cords, and I might even invest in a tiller attachment to maintain some beds.
So the Husq 128 LD will accept the $100 range attachments, as will most split shaft trimmers, but this Husq 128DJx will only take the Husq hedge trimmer attachment which costs $260. I still don't know if this is different from the 128DJ or the 128LDx. I didn't see it in the product description on Amazon or the Husq website and apparently a lot of the people who bought this split shaft trimmer aren't too interested in attachments. When I went back and checked, I did see a couple of reviews mentioning "Trimmer Plus" and "attachment" selection by searching Amazon reviews for those key words.
Also, according to the compare feature on the Husq website, there doesn't seem to be an advantage in the DJ(x?) over the LD(x?), and it's hedge trimmer attachment is over twice as expensive.
This is also a criticism of the attachment manufacturers who often list their attachments as universal, when there are a number of models of different brands with a very similar split shaft diameter that don't accept the "universal" attachments.
The DJx does run well, and I thought it was actually a little lighter than some of the other trimmers I've used. It has good balance, and I like the grass blade and the fact that it was included, though the box says brush cutter and I would have rather had a brush cutter blade. At this point, I'm not even sure this model is designed to be able to handle a brush cutter blade, and it did seem to bog down in thicker weeds, there seems to be a lot of unnecessary obscurity about this product, and after the attachment debacle, which, combined with the no-return situation, makes me doubt everything about this product.
I don't feel like the bump n go head works well at all, so I'm going to look for a replacement, and this is another prime example of the product manual leaving out the information that would be the most valuable and including things that no-one would need to be told.
Also, the handle extension didn't fit together the way described in the manual, like the threads were on the wrong side of the plastic handle extension, but I didn't want to use it anyway. And there is a cheap plastic feel to the whole machine that I would expect from brands that cost half as much.
Overall, the price isn't bad if all you want is the trimmer, but considering everything I want to do with it, and that it's marketed as a detachable shaft trimmer/brush cutter, the DJx would not be my recommendation.
Last, as mentioned before, I love purchasing from Amazon, but I'll buy gas powered tools locally from now on.
