‘The 5th Wave’, ‘Monster High’ and More Delayed

The 5th Wave, Monster High and Shut In have been delayed and Michael Moore’s upcoming documentary Where To Invade Next has been given a wide release date following its extremely limited Oscar qualifying run.

Columbia Pictures has delayed alien invasion thriller The 5th Wave from its originally scheduled premiere date of January 15, 2016 by a week, to January 22, 2016 where it will now open opposite STX Entertainment’s horror film The Boy and Lionsgate’s live action comedy Dirty Grandpa. According to a blurb released by Columbia Pictures parent company Sony Pictures Entertainment, the film, based on the Rick Yancey novel of the same name, follows an alien invasion in which “four waves of increasingly deadly attacks have left most of Earth decimated. Against a backdrop of fear and distrust, Cassie is on the run, desperately trying to save her younger brother. As she prepares for the inevitable and lethal 5th wave, Cassie teams up with a young man who may become her final hope – if she can only trust him.”

Directed by J. Blakeson (The Descent: Part 2, The Disappearance of Alice Creed) from a script by Academy Award winner Akiva Goldsman (The Da Vinci Code, I Am Legend), Academy Award nominee Susannah Grant (Pocahontas, Erin Brockovich) and Jeff Pinkner (The Amazing Spider Man 2, Zoo), The 5th Wave stars Teen Choice Award winner Chloe Grace Moretz (Kick Ass 2, Carrie), Nick Robinson (Jurassic World, The Kings of Summer), Golden Globe Award nominee Ron Livingston (The Conjuring, Band of Brothers), Maggie Siff (Sons of Anarchy, Funny People), Alex Roe (Sniper: Legacy, The Jury), two-time Golden Globe Award nominee Maria Bello (A History of Violence, The Cooler), Maika Monroe (It Follows, The Guest), Zackary Arthur (Transparent, Best Friends Whenever), Tony Revolori (The Grand Budapest Hotel, Dope), Talitha Bateman (The Hive, Life Grows On) and four-time Golden Globe Award nominee Liev Schreiber (Salt, Ray Donovan).

Next up, Academy Award winner Michael Moore’s (Bowling for Columbine, Fahrenheit 9/11) new documentary Where to Invade Next has received a wide release date of February 12, 2016, where it will open against 20th Century Fox’s R rated Deadpool adaptation, Warner Bros. and New Line Cinemas romantic comedy How to Be Single and Paramount Pictures long awaited sequel Zoolander No. 2. This one isn’t a delay, just an update.

The documentary, in which Moore examines several European countries’ methods of dealing with similar social problems found in the United States of America, was already set for a December 23, 2015 release for a one-week run in a Los Angeles and a New York theater so that it would be eligible for consideration in the Academy Awards in a few months time. The film will re-open on February 12, 2016 in a wider release.

Next up is EuropaCorp’s psychological thriller Shut In, which has been delayed from its previously scheduled release of February 19, 2016 to June 17, 2016, when it will open against the Warner Bros. action comedy Central Intelligence and Pixar’s long awaited Finding Nemo continuation Finding Dory.

Directed by Farren Blackburn (Daredevil, Luther) from a script by Christina Hodson (Unforgettable) and produced by Luc Besson, Shut In follows a child psychologist who lives in the middle of nowhere and struggles to save a child caught in a snowstorm near her home. It stars two-time Academy Award nominee Naomi Watts (King Kong, The Ring), Golden Globe Award nominee Oliver Platt (2012, X-Men: First Class), Charlie Heaton (Stranger Things, Rise of the Footsoldier Part II), David Cubitt (Stonewall, The Colossal Failure of the Modern Relationship) and Jacob Tremblay (Room, The Smurfs 2).

Finally, Universal Pictures has indefinitely delayed Monster High from its October 7, 2016 release date. Inspired by the series of dolls of the same name, the film is apparently about the children of famous monsters who attend the eponymous Monster High together. Directed by Ari Sandel from a screenplay by Stephanie Savage and Josh Schwartz, the film didn’t even have a cast announced, so the delay probably isn’t that surprising.
