ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — The Broncos have agreed to terms with Brandon Staley as outside linebackers coach, Head Coach Vic Fangio announced Tuesday.
Staley worked on Fangio’s defense in Chicago during the last two years as the team’s outside linebackers coach.
In Chicago, Staley coached a unit that included linebacker Khalil Mack, who tallied 12.5 sacks, six forced fumbles, 47 tackles and an interception return for a touchdown in 2018. The Bears ranked second in the NFL in sacks over the last two seasons.
Before joining the Bears, Staley spent three years as the defensive coordinator/secondary coach at John Carroll (2013, 2015-16), a Division III school. In 2016, his unit finished fourth in the nation in scoring defense and third in the country in total defense. Staley was named the National Coordinator of the Year after that season.
Including his time at John Carroll, Staley has 11 total years of collegiate coaching experience. He also worked at James Madison (2014), Tennessee (2012), Hutchinson (KS) Community College (2010-11), St. Thomas (2009) and Northern Illinois (2006-08).
At JMU, he helped the Dukes rank 11th in the country in turnovers and 13th in sacks per game. Two of his players earned first-team all-conference honors.
At Tennessee, Staley worked as a graduate assistant with Alexander Johnson, who led the SEC in tackles and spent much of the 2018 season on either the Broncos’ active roster or practice squad.
With the Broncos, Staley is expected to work with Von Miller and Bradley Chubb, who combined for 26.5 sacks in 2018, the second best mark in the NFL.
