United Kingdom Overseas Territories and Crown Dependencies Programme

Contributing to biodiversity conservation in the UK Overseas Territories is a component of one of JNCC's strategic goals. To deliver this, one of the organisation's programmes focusses on UK Overseas Territories and Crown Dependencies.

What we do

The JNCC Overseas Territories and Crown Dependencies Programme has a number of different strands of work that implement the provision of advice, primarily to UK government and OT and CD governments.  Core work areas include:

• Provision of the secretariat for the Interdepartmental Overseas Territories Biodiversity Group.
• Environmental Mainstreaming within Overseas Territories
• Overseas Territories and Crown Dependencies Training and Research
• Technical workshops focussing on progressing areas that are high priority for Overseas Territories and Crown Dependencies more recently these have focussed on areas such as Lionfish, Geographical Information Systems (GIS); Marine Protected Areas (MPAs).
• In-territory projects where support our in-territory partners to progress specific pieces of work. Currently these include a Darwin initiative marine mapping project in St. Helena, a Darwin Plus National Ecosystem Assessment Project in Anguilla.
• South Atlantic co-ordination and focal point for the South Atlantic Territories input into and implementation of the Agreement on the Conservation of Albatrosses and Petrels (ACAP).

We also work with with OT and CD partners to produce a range of publications. We have, for example,  developed guidance and toolkits on areas such as climate change and environmental economics, and provided a snapshot of biodiversity in the UKOTs and CDs The full publication is available for download>>> . In addition, JNCC provides small quantities of funding for:

• Overseas Territories and Crown Dependencies participation in regional or international meetings or training sessions. An update on all of the participants funded by JNCC can be found here>>

Together - and individually - the 17 OTs and CDs make a significant contribution to global biodiversity and geological diversity.  Many of the species found in the UKOTs and CDs are endemic and so are found nowhere else in the world.
