  11. Fish rescued from disappearing stream

    Amy Woodfield

    BBC News

A fish rescue operation has been under way in Buxton.

The Environment Agency has said about 100 brown trout and bullhead have died due to the natural disappearance of water in a stream.

    Died up stream in Buxton

Their officers have been carrying out "electro fishing" to rescue the remaining fish and transfer them to safety.

Paul Reeves said: "We have saved around 175 trout and 50 bullheads from a section of stream that has dried up. Investigations will continue tomorrow to consider ways to restore the water flow."

  12. Woman contracts sepsis from hot water bottle burns

    Amy Woodfield

    BBC News

A woman from Leicester is warning others about the dangers of using a hot water bottle.

When Karishma Singapuri fell asleep with one in her bed it gave her second degree burns on her legs - the burns then became infected and she contracted sepsis.

    Burn on leg

Karishma told the BBC she woke up because she felt her legs "stinging" and didn't initially realise how bad it was.

She went to the chemist and then to the walk-in centre where she was later referred to a specialist burns clinic and told she'd need a skin graft.

However she couldn't have the surgery right away because she caught sepsis.

    Burn on leg and foot

Karishma said: "My legs inflamed and I couldn't get out of bed. It was too painful for me to even move that much."

After the surgery she was bed-bound for about six weeks. Two years on she still has scars from the burns.

  13. Ponds 'safe' after cyanide spillage

    Amy Woodfield

    BBC News

Two ponds in Heanor are now safe to use again following a cyanide spillage at a nearby industrial estate.

Some of the chemical leaked into Adam’s Pond and Osbourne’s Pond at Shipley Country Park earlier this month.

The Environment Agency has said it's been carrying out regular tests on the water and it has now returned to a safe quality. Signs to stay out of the two affected ponds have now been removed.

    Pond at Shipley Country Park
Quote Message: The contamination was largely contained to Adam’s Pond, which unfortunately resulted in a number of dead fish being found in the pond but, due to the level of contamination, our staff were unable to enter the water to carry out a netting activity to capture them. We placed bags of activated carbon downstream of Osbourne’s pond to help filter cyanide out of the water and prevent it from leaking down the watercourse into the further ponds but the best course of action, minimising risk to people and the environment, was to wait for it to break down naturally. from Greg Oakes Environment Agency
