This fun, interactive game begins by introducing you to the Panda Sanctuary in Wolong, and explains that as a volunteer you must help raise a baby panda to be released in the wild. Throughout the game, the single player proceeds through levels and earns points for correct answers that lead to a healthy and happy adult panda. The player is first introduced to a companion, Ivy, who is also a volunteer. Ivy appears repeatedly to deliver advice, facts, or to help game play.
The player starts with a newborn and gets to choose whether it is male or female, and then gets to name the panda. Correct answers and decisions result in the panda learning a crucial life skill. After completing each level, the player chooses whether to continue or come back tomorrow. After 9 levels of play, the baby panda has fully grown and has all of the skills it needs to be released into the wild.
If the player doesn't answer the questions correctly, a Sanctuary Officer appears and gives a three-question quiz. We encountered a bit of a glitch during this section as the questions repeated, but the "correct" answers differed in two turns. Not answering the questions correctly leads to the Sanctuary Officer giving you one caution. Three cautions will cost you the game.
Instant feedback on answers is given with a combination of a tone and verbal acknowledgement. Point totals are given after each question, as well as at the completion of each level. Remediation isn't consistent, but when offered, is in the form of a hint rather than explicitly giving the right answer. Playing the game all the way through takes around 45 minutes, so for smaller children this might be better broken into a daily game time.
