From my movie review in Taki's Magazine: Read the whole thing at Taki's Magazine. By the way, here's video of the 2008 mushroom cloud over Tirana, Albania. It almost certainly wasn't Diveroli's fault, although it involved people he was involved with. Albania's paranoid dictator Enver Hoxha, who hated both the West and the Soviets, made...

The character who gets involved in gun running in Freedom was 1/4th Jewish and he had misgivings about it. But he did get connected in through a neocon think tank run by his Jewish roommate's father, IIRC.

Freedom captured the oughts in America better than any other novel I can think of. Franzen did the same with the late '90s in The Corrections and the first part of this decade with Purity.

I’m a reader. I’ve read at least 90% of what Franzen has published so far. I was won over from the 27th Movement on.

I’m glad you see this aspect of Freedom. There’s been total silence about the more political implications of Freedom – especially this connection between conservative think-tanks and jewish interests/traditions/ mind-sets – in the German reception of the novel.

The character that impressed me more than Jonathan though, was Jenna, his sister. – How she rides this horse into the semi-wild landscape in Patagonia: That’s (“almost” (Cameron Crowe)) overwhelming. Especially together with the comments about her as a kind of hard-boiled pleasure-seeking young and blooming women. Incredibly focused…and tough. Very impressive – even though not very lovely.

I was a little bit astonished about the silence here on the blog about Franzen: He’s white, he’s nice, he isn’t dumb: So why the reluctance?

Same thing with Purity now – especially the part about the dangers of “leak-as-much-secrets-as-you-can – no matter what”.

    – Might well be, that Trump gets into office as a consequence of actions motivated by this mindset – it would be the Nader- and Michael-Moore-effect on Gore – – once again, this time on Hillary.

Wether this then would turn out as Hegel’s strategem of history – – – ? ?

Well, thanks for writing about Franzen!

    How old are these relatives?

    My age range: 25-35

As for biblical names, some are more acceptable than others – Moses, Israel, Isaac, Abraham, etc. read as “too Jewish” and not acceptable. The ones that you mentioned you can get away with.

That's my point. They favor Anglo-Hebraic names that are used by all Anglo-Americans.

Moses, Israel, Isaac, Abraham, etc. read as “too Jewish” and not acceptable.

Interestingly enough, the only people that I have ever met named Isaac have all been Christian Southerners.

Before Kay Kyser, of Chapel Hill, was Kay, he was known as Kike. An obvious extension from Isaac/Ike, Susan/Sukey, etc. But it sure didn’t last long once he left Carolina– not in show biz!

  • @SFG
    Don't you mean 'Pferdmist'?

Rolls had to rename their Silver Mist for the German market. Toyota did the same in France for their MR2. Say it out loud at various speeds, and you’ll see why.

Evian and Perrier sell well in this country, but not Pschitt.

Isaac is an extremely common name among Centrist Orthodox Jews and rightward. Not quite as common among Modern Orthodox.

Yes, ever since the Joos took over Hollywood (circa 1915) it’s been all downhill from there.

Well no, not exactly. It was pretty much downhill into increasing degeneracy until a whole bunch of Catholics shoved through the Hays Code from 1930 to 1968. This resulted in grand, majestic films fit for any audience. The moment the Code was removed, films continued their movement into increasing degeneracy.

The tipping point film was most likely "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf," a film from a Jewish director, a Jewish producer and Jewish screenwriter, based on a play by a degenerate gay man of uncertain background. Also featuring the most beautiful convert to Judaism in history, Elizabeth Taylor, though by the time of the film she was pretty blowsy; but some coincidence, huh?

Also need to factor in Hollywood’s desire to compete with more sexually explicit films coming out of the Continent: And God Created Woman , Liane, Jungle Goddess, Era lui… sì! sì!, Summer with Monika, Bob le flambeur , etc

How old are these relatives? Biblical names never went totally out of fashion (and now they have made a comeback) but for a while American Jews were going more for the Eric, Scott, Madison, Michelle, type names.

As for biblical names, some are more acceptable than others - Moses, Israel, Isaac, Abraham, etc. read as "too Jewish" and not acceptable. The ones that you mentioned you can get away with.

Might be geographical factors at work. I’m from the Bay Area (CA).

Not just German Jews but almost all American Jews would have a "Hebrew name" (used when you were called up to the Torah in the synagogue and on your gravestone and that's about it) and an American name, used for everything else. Plus it is an Ashkenazi Jewish tradition to name your children for deceased relatives. So your Hebrew name might be Moshe, because you were named for your great grandfather who had that name, but everyone would know you by your American name Michael, which would have only the vaguest resemblance to your Hebrew name (sometimes a translation, but more often just the first letter - a mid century American Jew wouldn't name his kid either Moshe or Moses). So when old Jewish ladies showed each other pictures of their grandchildren , one might ask the other, "who is she named for?", and the other would reply, "her name is Rachel Michelle Horowitz. She was named for my great aunt Rukhl.

But as you say, the trend has reversed. In a modern joke, the same two Jewish grannies are showing each other pictures and Granny #1 asks who the kid is name for. And Granny #2 replies, "his name is Schmuley - he is named for his late grandfather, Scott."

    Michael is a Hebrew name:

Michael /ˈmaɪkəl/ is a male given name that comes from Hebrew: מִיכָאֵל / מיכאל‎‎ (Mīkhāʼēl, pronounced [miχaˈʔel]), derived from the question מי כאל mī kāʼēl, meaning "Who is like God?".[1]

The name first appears in the Hebrew Bible in the Book of Numbers, 13:13 where Sethur the son of Michael is one of 12 spies sent into the Land of Canaan. The archangel Michael features in the Book of Daniel 12:1,

Of course in origin it is a Hebrew name, Jack’s point is that in the American context it’s not an ethnic name . There are millions of non- Jewish Michaels but few, if any, non-Jewish Moshes.

"The Jews generally had Germanized Hebrew names that did not need to be changed as they were the same or very close to the English biblical names."

German Jews typically had a "shem khol" (secular name) and a "shem kodesh" (sacred name ). They went by secular name outside of synagogue ritual and the like. In my day ( 40 yrs ago ) 90 % of kids in my Orthodox Jewish high school had both secular and Jewish names. Today under the influence of multiculturalism and all that jazz it's around 20 %. Nobody feels the need to fit in to mainstream society etc.

Film critics have the same problem Hollywood has: People aren't all that interested in stories and characters they haven't heard about before. So Hollywood now makes a lot of sequels and reboots. Similarly, I tend to review movies that are tied to things my readers have some familiarity with.

A certain percentage of my readers over the years have been interested in the Efraim Diveroli story, so I review "War Dogs."

Most of my readers have seen the original "Ghostbusters," so I reviewed the all-female version. I reviewed "Mad Max: Fury Road" because it's a revival of a grand series from the 1980s and I have insights about Australia that other reviewers lack.

The musical biopic genre is in decline because you can't make money off soundtrack albums anymore, but when musical biopics do come out, I tend to review them: James Brown, Beach Boys, NWA.

I review frequent flier movies like "Steve Jobs," "Moneyball," and "The Social Network."

I review movies with a historical angle like Spielberg's "Bridge of Spies" and "The Probability Angle" about Alan Turing.

I'll review original movies like Christopher Nolan's "Interstellar" because I can place it pretty exactly in Heinlein-era sci-fi.

I reviewed Fincher's "Gone Girl" because it was being denounced for having a female villainess.

I reviewed both movies in the Planet of the Apes reboot series because the first one was great and tied into a lot of iSteve themes. The second one wasn't.

I reviewed Spike Jonze's "Her" because it was annoying and original.

Steve do you rarely do film reviews anymore because you believe the Alt-Right which is basically your reader base is not as up to date on pop culture as the general U.S population?

The alt-right is very pop culture focused as a result of the deliberate breaking by the schools and media of white cultural transmission.

They know more about cartoons than they know about Descartes.

    .

The bit the alt-right got from people like iSteve is the genetics.

The psychofash aspect of the alt-right is a reaction to the daily anti-white psychological abuse they got in the public schools.

If you beat a dog long enough eventually it’ll bite.

    .

More accurately the anti-white indoctrination in the schools and media are responsible for two extremes
    – white kids from all-white schools becoming extreme self-harming SJWs and Sanders fans
    – white kids from diverse schools who compare the school’s indoctrination with their personal experience becoming psycho-fash.

One of my favorite Sopranos scenes. Every once in a while, the program would illustrate how a particular mob operation worked, in this case the protection racket, often with a humorous element. There was a recurring bit with the shakedown of the guys that mowed lawns in the area, who were allowed a certain territory, had to mow a few "affiliated" lawns free, and had to kick back a percentage. A classic was the mob bust-out of the Sporting Goods store run by a guy who couldn't pay his gambling debts. The way Tony Soprano partnered with a black community activist to bilk a government low-income housing program out of a million was instructive too.

The sporting goods store was a real local one called Ramsey Outdoor.

I don’t see an edit button on mobile so I’ll add this here: Purity also includes a Lives of Others-style section set in East Germany in the ’80. Franzen studied German and studied in Germany for a while (he is an honoree of an arts society or something there).

  • @Dieter Kief
Jonathan Franzen was quite explicit about dobious Jewish arms dealers in Freedom. And he was even ahead of the Guy Lawson piece in Rolling Stone, which appeared about one year after Freedom.

Your instincts concerning the occasional needlessness of onspiracy-theories seem to be quite reliable.

I'm a reader. I've read at least 90% of what Franzen has published so far. I was won over from the 27th Movement on.

I'm glad you see this aspect of Freedom. There's been total silence about the more political implications of Freedom - especially this connection between conservative think-tanks and jewish interests/traditions/ mind-sets - in the German reception of the novel.

The character that impressed me more than Jonathan though, was Jenna, his sister. - How she rides this horse into the semi-wild landscape in Patagonia: That's ("almost" (Cameron Crowe)) overwhelming. Especially together with the comments about her as a kind of hard-boiled pleasure-seeking young and blooming women. Incredibly focused...and tough. Very impressive - even though not very lovely.

I was a little bit astonished about the silence here on the blog about Franzen: He's white, he's nice, he isn't dumb: So why the reluctance?

Same thing with Purity now - especially the part about the dangers of "leak-as-much-secrets-as-you-can - no matter what".

    - Might well be, that Trump gets into office as a consequence of actions motivated by this mindset - it would be the Nader- and Michael-Moore-effect on Gore - - once again, this time on Hillary.

Wether this then would turn out as Hegel's strategem of history - - - ? ?

Well, thanks for writing about Franzen!

“Trumbo wrote an antiwar parable and then, just before it was to be published, sat on it. Very Seeger of him.”

If you are referring to his book “Johnny Got His Gun”, it was published just about the time WWII began. After the US entered the war, he was still getting fan mail for it from isolationists, some of whom he reported to the FBI as being insufficiently anti-fascist. Yes, he denounced his own fans.

Trumbo was a talented screen-writer, but he was a dick and a commie rat-fink.

Yeah it's a nightmare, part of my job while working for the AF was purchasing IT gear. It was a royal PITA because the contracts were always awarded to some scumbag lowest bidder - which often turned out to be some Asian or Muslim run firm that supplied us with cut rate junk that often died within days of being turned on.

It wasn't just me either. Entire AF Wings got stuck with s**t that had to be junked or forced the AF to cancel the contract and return the junk back to vendor.

And always it was a minority run business doing the scamming - usually Asian or Muslim because they get first dibs.

I'd say go ahead and check those boxes and get in on the scam. Heck I know of a locksmith firm run by a felon who got contracts for providing safes for a AF black weapons project.

I heard an amusing procurement story about the Army. At a particular base, they didn’t want their employees bringing their own memory-sticks from home because of the IT security issues it might raise. So they bought a bunch to supply to their people. However, they were made in China, and were found to have been pre-loaded with spyware.

The real question this review raises is why does Steve think Dave Barry is funny and more importantly why does he mention him at all when he hasn't been culturally relevant since he had an (awful) sitcom in the 90s?

Dave Barry is literally never relevant to anything.

This is getting to be as bad as the golf course and Margaret Thatcher meeting tics.

Dave Barry was funny back in the 90s. Some of his books still are somewhat amusing. “Big Trouble” however wasn’t very good – a pale imitation of a Carl Hiassen novel.

Plenty of women have horrible taste in men. We live in a world where James Carville has a wife, even though he is one of the ugliest men in the world. He looks like an extra from Steven Spielberg's Close Encounters Of The Third Kind. He has a UFO face.

James Carville makes Miles Teller look like a male model from an Abercrombie & Fitch catalog.

War Dogs’ closest comparison is to Martin Scorsese’s The Wolf of Wall Street. But Scorsese didn’t have the courage to make the ethnic angle explicit. In his memoir, embezzler Jordan Belfort had explained the animus that motivated him:

Second, although Scorsese is a living legend, he’s Italian, not Jewish. So does he really need the risk? How’s Mel Gibson’s career doing?

Yeah, only Jews seem to be allowed to do certain things in Hollywood. Cf how, in HAIL, CAESAR! the Coen Bros had all the commies in Hollywood be either Jewish or Gay.

Only Nixon could go to China.

"Savage Jews. This isn’t the first time I encountered that phrase in the media. Way back in the 1970s, in an All in the Family episode, Archie threatens to sic his lawyers, Rabinowitz, Rabinowitz & Rabinowitz on the party that was annoying him. Archie characterizes them as “Seven savage Jews who will pick your bones clean”. But Jews in media had long cleared WASPs from their nests by 1975."

If Archie could afford Jewish lawyers, he wasn't so working class after all. Archie did own his own tavern, so he was his own boss, and thus had to be at least upper middle class.

Archie had a working class attitude, but his bank account was far from working class. He is like Donald Trump and Kid Rock.

You’re out of it. Archie was piss poor. He worked his entire life as a warehouse, loading dock foreman. Then he partnered up to buy into a shot and beer old man’s bar. His lawyers, Rabinowitz, Rabinowitz, Rabinowitz, were prole mall lawyers, and Archie never used them, just threatened to use them. Archie Bunker was a great character. Endlessly endearing, and as prole as one can get.

Piss poor people don't own a tavern or their own business in general. If he was piss poor he would be on welfare like the White trash that go on Jerry Springer and Maury Povich.

When I was in the technology business I would sometimes get calls out of the blue from people trying to get a quotation so they could bid on a government contract. It cracked me up how often it would be an Asian or Indian, (call-center not casino), woman with a heavy accent and a child fussing in the background, who was obviously calling from their kitchen table.

  • @Lot

Is that a cash cow when most Brothas there can not even legally purchase a firearm because of their criminal record?

There are probably some big-time straw buyers with clean records that they all go through. South Central does not have much in the way of gang wars anymore, and is certainly not a dangerous place to just drive to every once in a while to buy something from a specialty store.

Italian first names still exist in my family, me being one of them.

There is a big difference between something like Mario and Efraim and this family's other first names, which I should not have to explain. If they want to keep it Jewish, fine, there are plenty of very nice Anglicized Hebrew names.

Though I'd like to note that my many German ancestors with difficult names all seem to have anglicized their names soon after arriving here, including when filling out Census forms in the 1800's. The Jews generally had Germanized Hebrew names that did not need to be changed as they were the same or very close to the English biblical names. "Sarah" is the same in both English and German for instance. Moses is typically spelled Mose in German but can also be spelled exactly the same.

“The Jews generally had Germanized Hebrew names that did not need to be changed as they were the same or very close to the English biblical names.”

German Jews typically had a “shem khol” (secular name) and a “shem kodesh” (sacred name ). They went by secular name outside of synagogue ritual and the like. In my day ( 40 yrs ago ) 90 % of kids in my Orthodox Jewish high school had both secular and Jewish names. Today under the influence of multiculturalism and all that jazz it’s around 20 %. Nobody feels the need to fit in to mainstream society etc.

    • Replies: @Jack D

You raise a lot of interesting issues. I am fascinated with the related questions of (1) what the various contributions of European ethnic groups are to self-ID'd white Americans (2) what percentage of white Americans are 50%+ of one European ethnicity (3) what share of the "white Hispanic" population is 90%+ European and/or has a conventional white phenotype.

I've made some very rough stabs into these questions myself, but I have a day job.

German Jews in Ellis Island were more likely to keep their German last names than German Goys who went to great lengths to be accepted by English Americans, even if it meant adopting English last names.

Generally true, but it depends in part on the time and place. My German goy ancestors generally did not change their last times, including some pretty hard ones. That is in part because they settled in a very German part of the USA with plenty of other hard German surnames, as well as harder Slavic surnames.

Hence why so many Americans believe anybody with an extremely obvious German last name is automatically a Jew.

If the person is famous, not a bad assumption. But it varies by name and region, your statement would not be the case in suburban Milwaukee or rural Iowa for example.

Most German Goys in The U.S have British last names and not German last names like Zimmerman, Bundchen, Goldberg, Merkel, and Heidenreich for example.

Maybe! "Most" might be too strong. Don't forget there was no reason to change many German surnames, for instance Beck, Becker, Weber, Wagner, Hoffman, Wolf, Zimmer, Lang, Roth, Frank, or Simon. These are all on the list of 100 most common surnames in Germany. Prussian surnames are often harder, but often not. Radke and Wernke are hardly confusing to pronounce. Some easy and popular Austrian names not on the Germany top 100 surname list include Gruber, Moser, Hofer, Berger, Eder, Winkler, Egger, Binder, Ebner, and Koller.

One way to roughly estimate the relative share of German v Anglo blood in America is to compare a "no need to change" German last name's frequency in the USA versus Germany.

The other reason I would not say "most" German-Americans have Anglo surnames is that in addition to German surnames, they could also have, say, Italian or French surnames.

St. Louis Park sounds pretty nice:

Saint Louis Park (abbreviated St. Louis Park) is a city in Hennepin County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 45,250 at the 2010 census.[5] It is a first-ring suburb immediately west of Minneapolis. Other adjacent cities include Edina, Golden Valley, Minnetonka, Plymouth, and Hopkins.
St. Louis Park is the birthplace or childhood home of movie directors Joel and Ethan Coen, musician Peter Himmelman, New York Times columnist Thomas Friedman, Senator Al Franken, songwriter Dan Israel, guitarist Sharon Isbin, writer Pete Hautman, football coach Marc Trestman, and film director Joe Nussbaum. Baseball announcer Halsey Hall also lived there.
The Pavek Museum of Broadcasting, which has a major collection of antique radio and television equipment, is also in the city. Items range from radios produced by local manufacturers to the Vitaphone system used to cut discs carrying audio for the first “talkie”, The Jazz Singer.
The Coen brothers set their 2009 film A Serious Man in St. Louis Park circa 1967. It was important to the Coens to find a neighborhood of original-looking suburban rambler homes as they would have appeared in St. Louis Park in the mid-1960s, and after careful scouting they opted to film scenes in a neighborhood of nearby Bloomington,[6][7] as well as at St. Louis Park’s B’nai Emet Synagogue

Steve, the problem with the Boteach approach, screw over your customers, is that it FAILS when confronted by an Amazon. Or anything like that.

So even with buying and selling guns, online portals like Gunbroker connect buyers and sellers, with transfers done by a FFL holder, generally area gunstores of which there are many. Moreover online reviews (true subject to fakery, but most places like Amazon/Gunbroker/other portals do try to weed them out) provide a rough estimate of what the buyer or seller is like.

So that Boteach model is not going to fly. Indeed the future does not belong to men in Gold Chains, with funny hats and beards. Rather, it seems to be one giant global corporate gig entity, with everyone "rated" and reviewed and working on a per-gig basis, with the giant corporate middle man raking up profits by investing massively in technology not labor.

Look at buying a camera. You can go onto Amazon, Best Buy, Office Depot, any major online portal and find the best prices and reviews and easy, customer service friendly shipping and returns. Often, free returns. How is a Boteach going to compete against THAT?

The Boteach model only works on the fringes that the big corporate retail giants don't want to bother with -- pot, vaping, and other fringe stuff that the Government might crack down on any moment. Even so I suspect that Gunbroker is likely killing them.

Almost anything that can be dis-intermediated by lots of money and technology can and will be done; making life one giant TaskRabbit gig.

You can be pretty insightful Whiskey when not opining on the supposed sexual tastes of white women.

Silk Road’s owners created such a seller rating system for illegal things, mostly drugs. The founders, after expenses, made more than $100 million if I remember right. And that was only their platform fee, not from actual drug sales, suggesting that it may have facilitated more than $1 billion in mostly small, peer-to-peer drug sales.

If you are referring to his book "Johnny Got His Gun", it was published just about the time WWII began. After the US entered the war, he was still getting fan mail for it from isolationists, some of whom he reported to the FBI as being insufficiently anti-fascist. Yes, he denounced his own fans.

Most German Goys in The U.S have British last names and not German last names like Zimmerman, Bundchen, Goldberg, Merkel, and Heidenreich for example.

Maybe! “Most” might be too strong. Don’t forget there was no reason to change many German surnames, for instance Beck, Becker, Weber, Wagner, Hoffman, Wolf, Zimmer, Lang, Roth, Frank, or Simon.

One way to roughly estimate the relative share of German v Anglo blood in America is to compare a “no need to change” German last name’s frequency in the USA versus Germany.

The other reason I would not say “most” German-Americans have Anglo surnames is that in addition to German surnames, they could also have, say, Italian or French surnames.

Conventional White phenotype is subjective. I remember you said most Mexicans in the lower working class barrio of Lincoln Heights in Los Angeles look White to you and not Mestizo or Amerindian.

You have a very broad definition of "White Hispanic".

There was a recurring bit with the shakedown of the guys that mowed lawns in the area, who were allowed a certain territory, had to mow a few “affiliated” lawns free, and had to kick back a percentage. A classic was the mob bust-out of the Sporting Goods store run by a guy who couldn’t pay his gambling debts. You've won yet ANOTHER battle against a straw man.

No one denies many or most Communist screenwriters were Jewish. In fact, it's often written about how some of the blacklists and the like were somewhat anti-Semitic in nature since they mostly targeted Jews.

Hail, Caesar didn't explicitly make most of the screenwriters Jewish, anyway. But the point is that no one denies they were. The portmanteau screenwriter figure played in the film Trumbo by Louis C.K. was made Jewish, probably for that reason.

What films matter? The Pixar movie that got 100% on RottenTomatoes or the Lars von Trier movie that got four stars from Ebert and ZERO stars from Siskel?

If I see something with 98% on RottenTomatoes I know it's boring, middlebrow dreck. The King's Speech is awful. Whether it's more awful than "A Beautiful Mind" is, I guess, an open question. But who wants to ask that question? It would require thinking about the hackery of Ron Howard, for starters. Ron fucking Howard. The man who directed "The Da Vinci Code." To even talk about him is to commit a crime against film qua art.

The Pixar movie is fine for entertainment for your children but if you're talking about art I'll take the Lars von Trier movie that has critics gearing up for war. I want my art to have some balls. If nobody's buttons are pushed then you probably didn't do anything--good or bad. And if you give Ron Howard a film-making award you're on neither side of the debate because you're just an idiot.

On another note I'm surprised Michael Haneke didn't make the top 10. He is, to me, the best director working (along with Wong Kar-Wai).

The Coens grew up in the same suburb as Al Franken, for what it's worth. I'm sure their grandparents, if not their parents, were covenanted out of Minneapolis. Covenants, of course, were not quite free enterprise, but a civic constraint thereupon.

Well that would explain the same relative spelling their name slightly different each decade.

Death and marriage certificates also indicate German immigrants almost always anglicized difficult names and also, even within the same decade they arrived, gave their children English first names.

“Death and marriage certificates also indicate German immigrants almost always anglicized difficult names and also, even within the same decade they arrived, gave their children English first names.”

German Jews in Ellis Island were more likely to keep their German last names than German Goys who went to great lengths to be accepted by English Americans, even if it meant adopting English last names.

Most German Goys in The U.S have British last names and not German last names like Zimmerman, Bundchen, Goldberg, Merkel, and Heidenreich for example.

I've made some very rough stabs into these questions myself, but I have a day job.

Generally true, but it depends in part on the time and place. My German goy ancestors generally did not change their last times, including some pretty hard ones. That is in part because they settled in a very German part of the USA with plenty of other hard German surnames, as well as harder Slavic surnames.

A noticeable difference between pre-Revolutionary German immigrants and post-Civil War ones is that the latter are more likely to spell their names in the proper German way. Eisenhauer vs "Eisenhower", for example. All those colonial-stock "-baughs", in contrast, were "-bachs" entered into the ledger by Scots-Irish clerks.

Of course, I've also thought about how many of the little boxes I could check off if my wife and I started a one-house federal consulting company and whether getting in on the scam, as a patriotic American, is better than complaining about it.

Whiskey, thanks for mentioning that TaskRabbit thing in an earlier post. I hadn’t heard of it, now it’s my retirement plan. I’m already cutting lawns for extra income.

Haneke did well in the top 100.

They're both old, I guess, but to me still current as dominating European and western-influenced* Asian cinema, respectively. I mean, I saw some Godard this century but I guess I don't place him in the now.

*I've heard but don't know (because I don't know any Japanese) that Kurosawa eg was less lauded in his home than he was by white people. Kurosawa was a genius, full stop. But I guess it's possible I don't know what Asians value in cinema.

  • “Speaking of men with gold chains, Phillips always does an Alfred Hitchcock-style cameo in each of his films, such as Old School, as “Barry,” a velour-tracksuit-wearing sleaze with a necklace sporting a Hebrew symbol.)”

And in his third directorial effort, 2000’s “Road Trip,”, Phillips plays a Star-of-David-sporting bus passenger who licks the bare feet of mega-shiksa Amy Smart.

That offended me as a Jew more than anything Mel Gibson has ever said.

I will believe South Central is no longer a dangerous place when Asian dentists and White hipsters for example start moving in.

"There is a big difference between something like Mario and Efraim and this family’s other first names, which I should not have to explain."

Giovanni and Salvatore sound just as Non WASP and exotic as Efraim, as none of The Founding Fathers had names like that.

Actually, Ephraim (KJV spelling) is the kind of name that one would expect to find in Puritan New England.

Counterpoint: it’s not just that critics enjoy arguing for something flawed because they get to argue; it’s that it’s not a serious aesthetic endeavor if every corporate critic agrees.

What films matter? The Pixar movie that got 100% on RottenTomatoes or the Lars von Trier movie that got four stars from Ebert and ZERO stars from Siskel?

If I see something with 98% on RottenTomatoes I know it’s boring, middlebrow dreck. The King’s Speech is awful. Whether it’s more awful than “A Beautiful Mind” is, I guess, an open question. But who wants to ask that question? It would require thinking about the hackery of Ron Howard, for starters. Ron fucking Howard. The man who directed “The Da Vinci Code.” To even talk about him is to commit a crime against film qua art.

The census taker wrote down the names as he saw fit

Well that would explain the same relative spelling their name slightly different each decade.

Death and marriage certificates also indicate German immigrants almost always anglicized difficult names and also, even within the same decade they arrived, gave their children English first names.

Well that would explain the same relative spelling their name slightly different each decade.

Yes, that explains a lot of it. Also, before government issued birth certificates, your name was what you said it was. There would be family feuds and one would slightly change the spelling of their surname. If anyone asked about relatedness, one could answer, “Not related to them, we spell our name differently.”

I've tried to talk about the small business set asides in federal contracting and why they're so nuts (they get put into ginormous contracts no small businesses could possibly do, with the result the small businesses is just a potempkin front for a big corporation.) but when I tried to explain it to people, even reasonably well informed people, their eyes glaze over.

Of course, I've also thought about how many of the little boxes I could check off if my wife and I started a one-house federal consulting company and whether getting in on the scam, as a patriotic American, is better than complaining about it.

I have some familiarity with that at the state level. HUBs are a very iStevish topic.

including when filling out Census forms in the 1800′s.

In the 1800's people didn't fill out census forms like we do now. The census taker wrote down the names as he saw fit, sometimes he asked the person how they spelled their names and sometimes he just wrote it the way he thought that it should be spelled. Also, the HOH was frequently not the person providing the information. Adding to that, the surviving censuses in the archives are transcribed copies, not the original census form filled out by the census taker. Transcription introduces additional problems concerning the spelling of names.

"Death and marriage certificates also indicate German immigrants almost always anglicized difficult names and also, even within the same decade they arrived, gave their children English first names."

German Jews in Ellis Island were more likely to keep their German last names than German Goys who went to great lengths to be accepted by English Americans, even if it meant adopting English last names.

Hence why so many Americans believe anybody with an extremely obvious German last name is automatically a Jew. Many Americans still believe George Zimmerman is a Jew.

Most German Goys in The U.S have British last names and not German last names like Zimmerman, Bundchen, Goldberg, Merkel, and Heidenreich for example.

Because most German Goy Americans do not have easily identifiable German last names, I bet most Americans vastly underestimate how big their numbers are in this country.
  • Steve, the problem with the Boteach approach, screw over your customers, is that it FAILS when confronted by an Amazon.

Rather, it seems to be one giant global corporate gig entity, with everyone “rated” and reviewed and working on a per-gig basis, with the giant corporate middle man raking up profits by investing massively in technology not labor.

Look at buying a camera. You can go onto Amazon, Best Buy, Office Depot, any major online portal and find the best prices and reviews and easy, customer service friendly shipping and returns. Often, free returns. How is a Boteach going to compete against THAT?

The Boteach model only works on the fringes that the big corporate retail giants don’t want to bother with — pot, vaping, and other fringe stuff that the Government might crack down on any moment. Even so I suspect that Gunbroker is likely killing them.

Almost anything that can be dis-intermediated by lots of money and technology can and will be done; making life one giant TaskRabbit gig.

Silk Road's owners created such a seller rating system for illegal things, mostly drugs. The founders, after expenses, made more than $100 million if I remember right. And that was only their platform fee, not from actual drug sales, suggesting that it may have facilitated more than $1 billion in mostly small, peer-to-peer drug sales.

Yeah it’s a nightmare, part of my job while working for the AF was purchasing IT gear. It was a royal PITA because the contracts were always awarded to some scumbag lowest bidder – which often turned out to be some Asian or Muslim run firm that supplied us with cut rate junk that often died within days of being turned on.

It wasn’t just me either. Entire AF Wings got stuck with s**t that had to be junked or forced the AF to cancel the contract and return the junk back to vendor.

And always it was a minority run business doing the scamming – usually Asian or Muslim because they get first dibs.

I’d say go ahead and check those boxes and get in on the scam. Heck I know of a locksmith firm run by a felon who got contracts for providing safes for a AF black weapons project.

If the US's killers die because of the corruption in the US system, why should decent people regret this?
    , @Alfa158
When I was in the technology business I would sometimes get calls out of the blue from people trying to get a quotation so they could bid on a government contract. It cracked me up how often it would be an Asian or Indian, (call-center not casino), woman with a heavy accent and a child fussing in the background, who was obviously calling from their kitchen table.
    , @Mr. Anon
I heard an amusing procurement story about the Army. At a particular base, they didn't want their employees bringing their own memory-sticks from home because of the IT security issues it might raise. So they bought a bunch to supply to their people. However, they were made in China, and were found to have been pre-loaded with spyware.
  • Also, Bar-Kochba Boteach is named after the leader of the Jewish revolt against the Romans in 132 AD.

  • The real question this review raises is why does Steve think Dave Barry is funny and more importantly why does he mention him at all when he hasn’t been culturally relevant since he had an (awful) sitcom in the 90s?

Dave Barry is literally never relevant to anything.

This is getting to be as bad as the golf course and Margaret Thatcher meeting tics.

    • Replies: @Mr. Anon
Dave Barry was funny back in the 90s. Some of his books still are somewhat amusing. "Big Trouble" however wasn't very good - a pale imitation of a Carl Hiassen novel.
  • I don’t think the review mentioned (though Steve has before) that Rabbi Boteach also has an interesting and complicated relationship with Democratic star Cory Booker, going back to their days as Oxford Rhodes Scholars where Booker was VP of Boteach’s L’Chaim Society, but since sundered by the Iran deal apparently

    http://forward.com/news/337856/the-bromance-ends-what-split-cory-booker-and-shmuley-boteach/

“The Booker–Boteach dispute also presents a broader question for the Jewish community: Do years of support, both political and financial, of a politician entail a promise in advance that he will side with the community on key issues with broad national impact?”

Well, that was rather baldly stated…
