On Gov. Gavin Newsom’s 100th day in office today, he has yet to offer any significant policies on climate change or curbing California’s dependence of fossil fuels. During the campaign, Newsom promised to “on day one … issue a directive putting California on a clear path to 100 percent renewable energy.” He also pledged to oppose fracking and unsafe oil operations and shut down the Aliso Canyon gas storage facility in Los Angeles. Last month, 120 national, state and local organizations sent a letter to Governor Newsom urging him to make good on these commitments.
In response to Gov. Newsom’s first hundred days in office, Food & Water Watch Organizing Co-Director Mark Schlosberg issued the following statement:
“Governor Newsom has the opportunity to be a national leader on climate, but do to so he will need to take bold, immediate action. This means stopping the expansion of fossil fuels in California, banning fracking and unsafe drilling, and protecting communities from drilling and dangerous fossil fuel infrastructure like the Aliso Canyon gas storage facility, the site of the worst methane blowout in U.S. history. In February, Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti called for Alison Canyon to be closed and announced plans to move away from gas power plants. A hundred days into the Newsom administration, it is time for action. We urge Governor Newsom to be the climate leader he promised to be and take swift and concrete action to protect California’s communities and climate by moving the state off fossil fuels now.
