A three-metre bronze sculpture of Sir John Monash will be unveiled at Monash University’s Clayton campus in April.

Renowned Australian sculptor Peter Corlett OAM has been commissioned to produce the sculpture, which will be a significant addition to the physical landscape of the Clayton campus.

The statue depicts Sir John’s traits as a thinker, leader and visionary.

He will be standing on a concrete bridge - symbolic of his engineering career – and wearing a coat lapel to represent the Returned Sailors and Soldiers Imperial League badge.

A group of the earliest Monash graduates and staff - The Monash Pioneers - have worked to fund the project. The group formed following a major reunion in 2011, with a view to funding projects that would enhance the heritage value of the University.

Project chair Michael Headberry (BA, DipEd 1977, GradDipMktg 1981) said the sculpture would celebrate Sir John’s huge contribution to Australia “as a scholar, engineer, lawyer, soldier, educator, businessman, patron of the arts, Rotarian and visionary”.

More than 220 alumni, friends and organisations have made a donation to the project. To support the Sir John Monash sculpture project visit the Giving to Monash website.
