Wales 1-2 Holland, 11 October 1989, The Racecourse, Wrexham

Despite watching Wales as a fan for years, I have to choose the occasion of my first cap as my most memorable international match.

I was called into the international squad for the first time in April 1989 for a friendly against Israel in Tel Aviv and I remember how nervous I was turning up at the airport.

I was sat next to Mark Hughes on the aeroplane to Tel Aviv. Sparky had just moved back to Manchester United having spent time with Barcelona and Bayern Munich and I thought it would be a nice little ice breaker to start off the chat.

“What sort of place is Barcelona?” I asked. “Okay,” he replied. “Did you enjoy Munich?” I asked. “Yes,” he replied … after a dozen or so one word answers I realised he didn’t really want to chat!

It wans’t anything personal, when he was manager of Wales Sparky was great with me, but as one of the most experienced players in the squad, he probably just didn’t want to make small talk!

I have to say that Neville Southall was really great in looking after the younger lads in the squad. Yes, he was already ready to take the mickey, but he kept your back too.

The next time I joined up with the squad was in October 1989. We were playing against Holland at The Tacecourse and there was another new face in the squad for the first time; Gary Speed.

I remember walking in to the changing room and seeing this young lad in a Leeds united tracksuit and despite not getting a spot on the bench that night, he certainly made his mark on Welsh football for years to come.

Because of injuries to Mark Hughes and Ian Rush, Malcolm Allen and I were the forward line for the match against the reigning European Champions.

It’s a moment I will never forget, it’s what every footballer dreams about and when walking on to the pitch I remember thinking that half the stand had come from Dyffryn Ardudwy and Llanuwchllyn to support me!

I was playing against Ronald Koeman and I still say to this day when asked about the best players I have faced that Koeman is one of them. He was physically strong and very comfortable on the ball, something every forward hates in a defender!

Wales lost 2-1 with Mark Bowen netting a late consolation. I didn’t have the best game ever and I was substituted after an hour … I didn’t get a kick, but I did get a cap!
