Matt: Tia, welcome back to our seedy alley..

Tia: It’s good to be back.

Matt: We have Emmy Award winner, icon, and a very famous cartoonist. You’ve seen his work probably everywhere, “Strange Tales”, and most recently in “Heavy Metal” actually. Welcome to the show, Dean Haspiel..

Dean: “Heavy Metal” with Stoya. Thank you. Thanks for having me on the show.

Matt: I actually just came from a signing, well, two signings, but the earlier signings was with Stoya at the “Heavy Metal” booth because we did a four page comic together, and also I have a Billy Dogma story in the same issue. Then I also did a WebToon signing for the Red Hook which is a free web comic online at Line WebToons.

Tia: Do you really feel energized by getting to do these signings, and meet fans, and that sort of thing? Are you a cartoonist who would rather be back at your studio?

Dean: Oh my god, I love people. I hate drawing. I hate sitting at the art table. You know what I do like? I like writing. I realize, when you break it all down, image is text in comics. I realize I’m doing more writing with that drawing. I’m not a guy drawing poses or pin-ups. I even have trouble with covers. I like when you have to go panel to panel to panel and you keep moving those pages because you’re showing and telling a story.

Tia: Right.

Dean: With that in mind, I didn’t have a lot of confidence in writing. As I’ve gotten older, I just turned forty-nine in May.

Matt: Man, you look amazing.

Dean: Thank you. I look really good … I was going to say the radio, that’s how old I am. On the podcast. I look fabulous. Actually, I was in the bathroom and there were all these very depressed, sad people in the bathroom, waiting in line. I went to the mirror and I said really loud, “Damn, this mirror is sexy!” They all looked at me like I was an asshole. No one laughed.

Matt: You ever heard of Superman?

Tia: Once or twice.

Matt: Once or twice. We’re here with a special guest, writer of the new Super-Man. Gene Yang, welcome to the podcast.

Gene Yang: Thank you. Thank you for having me.

Matt: Your journey into graphic storytelling is, in my opinion, very different than what most people perceive as like modern day Superman writer-esque. You use the medium to help educate in a big way. What was the moment where you thought to yourself that I can use these two things to help educate in a different way than most people are used to?

Gene Yang: I came up through the indie route. I started off as a self publisher, and then eventually I did a book with Image,, and now most of my creator owned stuff is with First Second Books, which is an imprint of McMillan. That part of the comic book world is definitely more connected with teachers and with librarians, so I get a chance to meet a lot of teachers and librarians. I was also a high school teacher for seventeen years.

Now, many people know your work from most recently Supreme Blue Rose with Warren, but I think a lot of people don’t realize you’re heavily involved with shops and bringing artists together in the UK with Thought Bubble. How did that start and why is that a focus for you?
