Stig Inge Bjrnebye's season has come to a premature end after a freak accident. The Liverpool full-back broke his leg when his studs got stuck in the grass as he stretched to reach a cross from Jamie Redknapp in the 3-1 home victory against Southampton on Wednesday night.

The Norwegian will now have his broken left fibula in plaster for four weeks. He will then recuperate for up to six weeks.

The Scottish Football Association has confirmed that it has asked the Danish FA for information about the transfer of the goalkeeper, Henrik Jorgensen, to Dundee United last summer. Jorgensen joined United from Viborg for £180,000 but the transfer has been at the centre of "bung" allegations.

Marseille yesterday won a stay of execution from their creditors but face yet another day of reckoning as the threat of compulsory relegation looms next week.

The club, who have run up debts of £40m following their relegation to the Second Division in the wake of an attempt to rig a French League match almost two years ago, were told by a commercial court that their affairs would be settled at a new hearing on 14 April.

It is widely expected thatMarseille, European champions in 1993, will be forced to go into receivership, which would mean automatic relegation under French League rules.

Noel Le Graet, the League's president, has said that if Marseille finish in a promotion position this season - they are currently second - they would be forced to stay in the Second Division.
