Taipei, Feb. 24 (CNA) Kaohsiung Mayor Han Kuo-yu (韓國瑜) set off for Kuala Lumpur on Sunday on a five-day trip to Malaysia and Singapore to drum up interest in his city's agricultural products and tourism attractions.

It will be Han's first official overseas visit since his surprising victory in the Nov. 24, 2018 mayoral election that ended the Democratic Progressive Party's 20-year reign in the city and moved it into the Kuomintang camp.

Before taking off from Taoyuan International Airport, Han told CNA that a main focus of the trip will be to seek distribution channels and orders for farm and fishery products from Kaohsiung in the two markets.

He also hopes to convey the message that "Kaohsiung is opening its arms to all cities, nations and territories" of the world, the mayor said.

At the same time, Han intends to meet with Taiwanese expatriates and entrepreneurs in Malaysia and Singapore and introduce the new and vibrant Kaohsiung to them, he said.

According to the Kaohsiung City government, Han will visit trading companies and attend a business promotion event after arriving in Kuala Lumpur on Sunday before heading to Singapore on Monday afternoon.

Once in the city-state, he will visit a business incubation center at the National University of Singapore, meet representatives of innovative businesses, attend a luncheon hosted by the Asia Taiwanese Chambers of Commerce and hold a press conference to promote tourism in Kaohsiung.
