Kate Winslet Kate discusses her ordeal with playing Rose in Titanic.

Season 10, Episode 1011

Original Airdate: March 14, 2004

Kate Winslet was born into a family of actors: both her parents were stage actors and her grandparents ran the Reading Repertory Theater. It only took the actress 11 years to join them, when she took her first television part and played opposite the Honey Monster in a cereal commercial.

Six years later, after professional training and several small parts in theater and television productions, Winslet landed her first leading role in a major motion picture, 1994's “Heavenly Creatures.” Winslet then starred in “Sense & Sensibility,” which earned her an Oscar nomination for best supporting actress.

After two more period pieces in 1996, “Jude” and “Hamlet,” Winslet took the role of Rose DeWitt Bukater in the blockbuster “Titanic.” Her performance, as well as the enormous popularity of the film, catapulted her into the spotlight. It also earned her yet another Oscar nomination, making her the youngest actress in history to receive the honor twice.

After the success of the film, Winslet decided to take on smaller projects such as the 1998 indie “Hideous Kinky,” and 1999's “Holy Smoke.” Winslet's more recent films include “Iris,” which earned her a third Oscar nomination, “The Life of David Gale,” and “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind,” which she filmed with Jim Carrey and was released in March 2004.
