A poll conducted by the Associated Press between December 8 and December 12, 2011 has President Barack Obama’s approval rating among U.S. adults at 44 percent, down two points from the last time the survey was conducted in mid-October. Although this is the lowest AP presidential approval rating this year, the president still leads Romney by one point in approval among adults asked to choose between the two, and he edged Newt Gingrich by nine points. More than 50 percent of respondents stated that they agreed, or somewhat agreed, that President Obama cares about people like them, will keep the country safe, and is a strong leader. Obama’s likeablilty rating was 76 percent, also at a one-year low, and down from 78 percent in October. Respondents indicated 39 percent approval for the president’s handling of the economy, which is down one point from October but up three points from August. Fifty-two percent of respondents stated President Obama deserves to be voted out of office, but 48 percent said that he actually would be voted out of office, compared to 49 percent who stated he would be re-elected.

The sample in this poll consisted of 1000 U.S. adults, 700 of whom were contacted by landline and 300 of whom were contacted by cell phone. Random-digit dialing and live interviewing were used to conduct the survey. Data was weighted for demographics, adults in household, and multiple phones in household, including homes with both cell phones and landlines. Interviewers spoke English and Spanish, and order was varied when questions and answers were listed. The margin of error was +/- 4. The Associated Press states that its methodology is consistent with recommendations from such polling watchdogs as The American Association for Public Opinion Research and the Council of American Survey Research Organizations.
