Elsevier has special arrangements in place with funders in the UK and the US to support national open access policy compliance. Authors from these countries will need to check our agreements pages for further information about applicable embargo periods.

• In cases of co-authorship, the shortest embargo period that applies to the article can be used by all authors. For example, where a paper is co-authored with researchers from the UK and USA, the respective embargo periods for these countries will apply.

It is when a time delay is applied to an article before it can either be officially published or made publicly available. Our journal embargo finder only lists the embargo periods which apply to self-archiving. These differ from other embargo periods such as press embargo or an embargo period which applies to our open archive content.

For subscription articles, an appropriate amount of time is needed for journals to deliver value to subscribing customers before versions of articles become freely available.

Elsevier’s embargo periods vary per journal and reflect differing usage patterns within journals.  In some cases, for example for a newly launched journal, an embargo period may not be shown in the journal embargo period finder tool. Please contact us for further advice.

Elsevier regularly reviews our embargo periods which can change from time to time. We recommend authors check their journal's embargo period before self-archiving and also our funding body agreements to see if exceptions apply.

Elsevier’s embargoes apply from the date the article is formally published online in its final and fully citable form. This is the issue publication date or, for journals which have article-based publishing, this will be the online publication date.

Authors are able to share versions of their article throughout the publication process in line with our sharing guidelines. Once an embargo period has expired, authors are able to take advantage of some wider sharing options such as publicly posting their accepted manuscript on their institution’s repository.  Find out how you can share and promote your research
