Coming Soon: A More App-Centric Package Management Experience

by | Sep 9, 2015 | Developer's Desktop, General News |

A few months ago I shared a screenshot of an application that we were working on with our Google+ Community. The response was overwhelmingly positive, and many of you expressed interest in our newest project. With that in mind, I thought you might like a status report on the application’s development.

You might have noticed that I keep referring to it as an “application”. That is because we have yet to choose an official name for it. Actually, we could use some help from the community to come up with the perfect name. Feel free to leave your suggestions in the comments below! In the meantime, we have been referring to it, internally, by a codename: Poodle. Don’t ask me where it came from as I have no good explanation for you. It doesn’t symbolize anything, its not an acronym, and most importantly it will be dropped prior to the first release 😉

Most of the progress that we’ve made since sharing that screenshot back in June has been “under the hood” as they say. However, some of the frontend UI is functional, so I prepared a short video that should give you a good idea of the direction we are going in with Poodle:

As you probably noticed, it doesn’t look like your typical desktop application and that’s because its not. As you know, we ❤ Python here at antergos, so naturally Poodle is a Python application. The frontend UI is HTML/CSS/Javascript rendered by QtWebEngine. Our goal is to strike a nice balance between styles typically found on the web and those typically found on desktop apps. We want to ensure that using Poodle feels as native as possible.

I know the question on everyone’s mind right now: “When will it be ready for beta testing?”. Well, I’m hate to disappoint, but we’re not even close to that point yet. There is a lot of work left to do and as much as we would love to work on Poodle everyday until it is complete, that’s simply not possible. We all have full time (paying) jobs that must come first. Though I can assure you that we have every intention of seeing this through as it fills a void in what installed Antergos systems provide. I hope you are excited about Poodle as we are. Let us know what you think in the comments section. Cheers! 🙂
