Associate Members
(1) Further to the communication dated 14 February 2019 from the permanent mission addressed to the Protocol and Liaison Service in line with the Final Agreement for the Settlement of the Differences as Described in the United Nations Security Council Resolutions 817 (1993) and 845 (1993), the Termination of the Interim Accord of 1995, and the Establishment of a Strategic Partnership between the Parties. Effective date: 14 February 2019. (2) NEW NAME AS OF 7 APRIL 2009. (3) As of 25 October 2013 subsequent names replaced: Cape Verde; the Republic of Cape Verde; and Cape Verde escudo. (4) Effective date for the short official name: 17 May 2016; Pronunciation: "CHECK-iya" (5) Further to the communication dated 30 May 2018 from the permanent mission addressed to the Protocol and Liaison Service, the country name was changed from the former name of the Kingdom of Swaziland (former short form: Swaziland). (6) From the 1st of January 2012 the official name of the state is “Hungary”, instead of the previously used “Republic of Hungary”. (7) On 16 September 2011, the National Transitional Council requested, via the Protocol and Liaison Service, that the form "Libya", previously not in use at the UN, replace both the earlier official and short forms (respectively, the Socialist People's Libyan Arab Jamahiriya and Libyan Arab Jamahiriya (the)). (8) Former formal name: the Republic of Montenegro; replaced 19 October 2007 after the adoption of a new constitution. (9) On 4 August 2008 the Permanent Mission of Nepal to the United Nations informed the Organization that the formal name "Nepal" was replaced by "the Federal Democratic Republic of Nepal". The formal name "Kingdom of Nepal" had been replaced by "Nepal" as of 22 August 2006. (10) Change of formal name from "Papua New Guinea" announced in March 2013. (11) Previously a Member State from 11 March 1965 to 31 December 1972. (12) The former Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia became a Member State on 31 March 1950. The participation of Yugoslavia in meetings of governing bodies and conferences of UNESCO was suspended following Resolution 47/1 adopted by the General Assembly of the United Nations on 22 September 1992, which stated that the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (Serbia and Montenegro) could not continue automatically the membership of the former Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (SFRY). Accordingly, the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, which became a Member State on 20 December 2000, could not automatically succeed the former SFRY as a member of the Organization.
Following the adoption of the Constitutional Charter of Serbia and Montenegro by the Assembly of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia on 4 February 2003, the name of the State of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia has been changed to 'Serbia and Montenegro'. (13) Previously a Member State from 4 November 1946 (founding member) to 31 December 1956. (14) Previously a Member State from 4 November 1946 (founding member) to 31 December 1985. |
