String Construction Construction is another key component of string performance. D’Addario offers a variety of construction methods to help you achieve your perfect tone and feel: Round Wound – The most popular and universal construction, delivers that traditional textured feel most players are familiar and comfortable with. Half Round - We start with a finished round wound string then carefully remove the tops of the windings through our unique centerless grinding technique. Half Rounds deliver a smoother feel similar to flat wounds with the flexibility and tension of a round wound string. Great for reduced finger noise and slide guitar. Flat Wound – Flattened stainless steel “ribbon” wire wound onto a complex series of under windings. D’Addario Chromes are then polished to an ultra-smooth feel and offer a damped, mellow tone preferred for jazz and twang.

Metallurgy 101 String alloys can have a dramatic impact on your tone, feel and string life. Here is a quick look at D’Addario’s diverse selection of electric string alloys: Steel - D’Addario’s unique ProSteels alloy is our brightest and most corrosion resistant wire. ProSteels are preferred by many rock/metal, country and jazz players for their super-bright, crunchy tone and highly textured feel.
Nickel-plated Steel - The industry standard for electric guitar and D’Addario’s most popular electric strings. Nickel-plated steel offers perfect balance of dynamic magnetism and smooth, comfortable feel. Their distinctive bright tone is extremely versatile for all styles of music.
Pure Nickel - The primary electric string alloy used in the 50s and early 60s. Its lower magnetic properties deliver slightly warmer, “broken in” tone preferred by many vintage enthusiasts.

EXP Technology Welcome to EXP Coated Technology, the most natural sounding coated strings available!
How do we do it? D’Addario has developed exclusive wire coating machinery which allows us to fully control all critical variables in the coating process. This groundbreaking process draws wire from rod, anneals, cleans, coats, cures and spools in one continuous process ensuring adherence to extremely tight tolerances. Every spool of wire is tested with sophisticated laser refraction technology which measures coating concentricity to 10,000th’s of an inch ensuring unmatched consistency. This micro-fine coating is applied to wrap wire PRIOR to winding. Strings are wound normally producing an uncoated feel and tone that last at least 4 times longer. As hundreds of artists and dozens of guitar manufacturers can attest… you won’t believe they are coated!
