Fashioned in the spirit of Ambrose Bierce's The Devil's Dictionary, Encyclopedia Dramatica's purpose is to provide a central catalog for the e-public to view parody and satire of drama, memes, e-pals, and other interesting happenings on the Internets. See the User Group Rights page showing the rights of the users of each group. The group you're in dictates what your privileges are on ED.

All are welcome, as long as you read and agree to the General disclaimer. The only real requirement is to create an emailconfirmed account to edit articles. ED doesn't support anonymous editing. (IP addresses)

• Got a lulzworthy subject you feel needs to be written about? Submit it to the Needed/Proposed page and someone might pick it up. Make sure you check to see if there's already an article about the subject first.

• Patrol recent changes to see what others are doing.

• Ask questions at the Thizzlehat Junction Center.

Writing

• Write an article. This is the best thing you can do for ED.

• Check the Bad New Articles portal to see if there's anything that ought to be expanded or cleaned up.

• Check the list of wanted articles. This is automatically generated when two or more pages contain links to a page that doesn't yet exist.

• Expand on stubs.

• Rewrite crappy articles.

• Review random page.

• Suggest Good New Articles and Bad New Articles.

• Suggest Did you know....

• We're always in need of Article of the Now and Quote of the Now suggestions.
  • Picture of the Now and Video of the Now are also nice.

• Forum members should highlight good threads.

Images

• Add images to articles, or upload better versions of wanted images. Make sure you give your image a detailed name instead of a bunch of symbols or numbers so search engines can actually find them and link to them easier.

• Browse though unused images and files and find homes for them. Do not delete or put death notices on duplicate images, use the {{duplicate}} template instead.

Maintenance

• Eliminate dead-end pages by adding links to other articles, preferably lonely ones.

• Categorize articles. We have a list of existing categories and a list of uncategorized articles. To add an article to a category, click that page's edit link and at the bottom of the entry, type [[Category:'''(name of category)''']] and click "Save Page." Use the "Show Preview" button to make sure you typed a category that exists (red links mean you failed). Do not create new categories.

• Rotate a Portal. Seriously, this would be highly appreciated. The goal is to have each one changed once every two weeks or so. Anyone can do this.

Mainpage lag

I can't be alone in noticing that the POTN for Oct 13th is still on display, despite IRL being halfway through Oct 14th. This only seems to happen with political POTNs relating to the Trump administration.
Is there something we should be told?

I reckon you're mistaken. As of just a few minutes ago, the mainpage went from displaying the XOTNs for Oct 22, to displaying the XOTNs for Oct 24. The XOTNs for Oct 23 never appeared at all. Computers don't lose count, and the Twilight Zone doesn't exist, so this was done deliberately by someone with access to the site's backend.

Reinstalling Extension:RandomSelection

The background-color on the Vaporwave page used to be selected by {{User:Meepsheep/Vaporwave/colors}} on each page load, but I noticed that the template was broken. The template made use of the <choose> tags, which are used by the MediaWiki extension Extension:RandomSelection. I checked Special:Version and sure enough, there's no RandomSelection extension installed.

Figuring it was once previously installed, would it be possible for a sysop to reinstall the extension? It would be cool to see again on the site!

Temporary measures

Due to the fact we have two madmen going to war over their respective articles and vandalizing website (misters D and E), I've removed both articles, purged images, blacklisted redirects etc. New users (registered in the last 7 days) can only make 2 edits per minute, or create one page per minute. Registrations are temporarily closed. Waiting on hipcrime to send me info regarding the group settings he wants, and I'll install some anti vandalism extensions.

Approving each edit sounds like a pain in the ass. It would eat up time, slow down coverage of breaking news, and build legal risks for moderators. We would have to change our disclaimer, since the moderation extension would break the legal basis for things like "Each contributor of encyclopediadramatica.rs holds full rights and responsibilities for materials they personally publish via this encyclopediadramatica.rs web site. By use of this site, you accept and recognize this qualification and indemnify not only the owner of encyclopediadramatica.rs but also all other contributors to encyclopediadramatica.rs from any legal action" and "please pursue your remedies against that poster as encyclopediadramatica.rs is not responsible for their words." The moderator extension would create collective responsibility for anything that happens. How about we use Extension:ConfirmAccount instead? Approving accounts is simpler than approving each edit. Problems with my article

Most ED articles seem to be satirical with at least some underlying truth; in contrast my article was created by some people trolls e.g. Mikemikev who have a grudge against me and wrote nothing but lies and smears.

-- I'm not and have never been asexual, mentally ill, psychotic, a Nazi, an ethno-nationalist, a anti-pornography activist, SJW, Antifa etc. It's a 100% fake biography written to negatively influence web searches of my name. Furthermore, large sections of the article aren't me, e.g. the TombRaiderForums from 2006, Army Men 3d etc. None of that stuff is even mine. Also people can simply find me on Twitter to see I'm none of these things. Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong, with this template?

When I slot in the page identifier string (e.g., this bit: http://www.webcitation.org/750yAgCTN), the template forms correctly and links to the right site, but it always gives webcitation's 404.

I'm stumped. It would be good to fix it, because then we have a go-to for non-waybackable pages.

The "&eurl=http://encyclopediadramatica.rs/Main_Page" is part of a query string that will define the variable eurl with the content "http://encyclopediadramatica.rs/Main_Page" so the site can then use that variable. There is nothing to prevent it from happening again, except the determination of ED contributors not to let it happen again. Wikis are collaborative projects. In my book, "collaboration" includes not carelessly making more work for other people, even on a wiki as ramshackle and uncoordinated as this one. So yeah, if someone wants to write something for the mainpage, they should be putting in the effort to make sure it's fit for public consumption. I don't think this is an unreasonable or disproportionate thing to expect.

i was editing the dame pesos article and found something odd. when a pipe is put to the word "YouTube", instead of a pipe, it removes the word entirely (for example, ~YouTube~, if i am correct there should be nothing between the two tildes, see the source code to verify that i actually typed it if you want).
this doesn't only happen on these two pages either, for some reason the yt pipe is removed on all pages, a really obvious example being the ytseries template where it simply says "X is part of a series on." instead of what it should say, which of course is "X is part of a series on YouTube.".
it even happens on the search results page, look up "YouTube" to find pages containing the words and it simply says There is a page named "" on this wiki. See also the other search results found. and it removes the link to yt?

I can see the word "YouTube" between the two tildes; the {{ytseries}} template appears to have the word "YouTube" in the position where it should be; and the Special:Search function does return results containing the word "YouTube", just as one might expect.

So there's a guy who came here, and posted rule34 of some PBS Kids show depicting underage character(s), falling within removal policy. I made sure to ban him and flush the offending images. Did I make the right call, or is there anything else I need to do?

FWIW, years ago on the old ED loli/shota and even some toddlercon images were allowed to an extent. Not sure when exactly that policy became more strict, but it was probably around the time of the whole CBLDF thing came into being. I mean, we still have the Baby Fuck page FFS.

It also seemed like that user was trying to actually write an article on Word Girl. Personally, I think it would have sufficed to simply remove the images and warn the user not to be more careful about what they upload. Mainpage lag: mystery solved

.... except the answer turns out to be another mystery. When the mainpage gets stuck displaying XOTN for >24 hours, the solution is to dive in and make a minor edit to the POTN that should be displaying, and then save it. This immediately prompts the mainpage to update itself properly.

I have no idea why this works. It's obviously some kind of bug and there's no realistic chance of it being fixed, so this is your workaround.

VOTN for April 5. Was working normally when I created the page a few hours ago. It still looks like it should play normally, but when you try to view it, it comes up with "video unavailable." I'm not a fan, but it's nowhere near SAA status. A lot of time and effort has gone into that, and it's fairly comprehensible too.

On the downside, it is over-long and over-detailed. By which I mean, there's lots of bits that the author enjoyed adding but which really slow it down.

So my two cents'-worth is: take the shears to it with gusto, and see how you feel about it when you've cut it down to size.

On Featuring Articles Prematurely

The Etika World Network was put on the front page while it was still being written (it was only finished after the 2 days it was AotN) and now I come home to see ProJared's stub article as today's AotN. There is no mention of him cheating on his wife in that one fucking paragraph you managed to barf there. Looking at the article itself, it is still a stub. Most of the drama is not put into words and only the screenshots are there, which in itself do not tell the story properly. The one paragraph recently written which does describe the drama goes off topic to talk about ScrewAttack.

It's not really the mirror doing the distorting, it's the fact that the camera is "looking up" at him. His jaw appears bigger (because it's closer) and the top of his head appears smaller (because it's further away). I don't know enough about smartphone camera lenses to draw any further conclusions.

But that foreshortening effect, plus three years and a home-made buzzcut, accounts for the potato-head on the EDF pic of the sonofabitch. He's a weird lookin mofo anyway - if you google for pictures of Pruitt, you will find it hard to believe that they all depict the same person. But that dribble-lipped mouth and the moles are as good as a fingerprint.

Here's a (very very) rough attempt to cancel out the sharp perspective. It's slightly misleading because you're still looking up his nose and at the underside of his jaw); and his mouth has stayed big and his eyes stayed small (those original perspective effects would take a lot of shooping to fix). Also, bear in mind that he was 18/19 in the Esquire pic and 21/22 in the EDF pic, so his face will have broadened and filled out a bit in the interval.

It's easier to perform the adjustment in your mind's eye than it is to replicate it via photomanip. Anyway, hopefully this clarifies things a tiny bit, rather than confusing them even further.

Also FTR, and as my closing statement on this whole thing, I followed up that "probably edited" detection result (above). It meant the photo had definitely been through editing software, but the detection software couldn't tell what had been done to it.

So I put the 1st new POM photo through an image forensics program. The luminance (brightness) element of the photo appears to show that the picture is composed of two layers. The foreground layer (hand + newspaper) and the background layer (POM's face + body) seem to be lit from opposite directions. The paper and hand are lit from the right; and the rest of the photo from the left.

Additionally, there's what appears to be a sudden, sharp, and bright cropmark where the hand cuts in front of the face (there is no sharper or narrower edge in the whole photo), and the shadow of POM's head on the wall behind him appears to have a hole in the middle.

This could be hard evidence that the original photo was indeed taken while looking in a mirror. It was then apparently split into two layers, with one layer (the newspaper) flipped L-R to make it readable again, the other (POM's head and face) left reversed (and then slightly retouched for some reason). Hence two apparent light sources, in two separate and very distinct zones of the photo.

But then I realized that this road leads to the nuthouse, so I went "lol, internet" and you can make of these findings what you will. I wash my hands of it.
