New Castle is home to special events throughout the year. Many of these one-time events are sponsored by community organizations or by the town. We also have a series of annual events:
Fourth of July Apple Tree Community Celebration
The Freedom Celebration is held on July 4th at Apple Tree Community. Come and enjoy music, kid’s games, and lots of food, all starting at 12 noon.
Hogback Hustle
New Castle’s annual race is part of the Colorado River Valley Charity Race Series in early July. The race makes its way through New Castle Streets and ends with a breakfast hosted by the Lions Club.
Burning Mountain Festival
The Burning Mountain Festival has been a New Castle tradition since 1973. Originally sponsored by the New Castle Branch Library, the Festival was adopted by the Chamber of Commerce with support from the Town. The Festival is now sponsored be the Town with the help of generous volunteers.
The Burning Mountain Festival is New Castle’s signature event. Taking place over two days in early September, the Festival celebrates the Town’s mining history and is named for our iconic mountain in which a coal seam still burns.
The festival includes a parade, musical performances in Burning Mountain Park, craft and food vendors, pancake breakfast, classic car show, kid’s carnival and new special activities each year.
The Burning Mountain Festival is a small town’s celebration of summer, friends, family and tradition. Neighbors from near and far are encouraged to join us.
Thanksgiving Dinner
Each November the Lions Club, which serves the community in many ways, is the host of the Community Thanksgiving Dinner in the Community Center.
Tree Lighting, Craft Fair and Chili Cook-off
In early December the Town gathers in Burning Mountain Park to judge an amazing variety of Chilies along with a Craft Fair and the Lighting of the Town’s Holiday Tree.
Founders Day Celebration – Saturday February 9th from 11:00 am to 1:30 pm at the Community Center
In February enjoy stories of New Castle’s past along with an Old-Fashioned Potluck lunch with foods that were popular in the 1880’s. Founders Day was established following the Town’s 125th Anniversary. Previous Founders Day Celebrations have honored the Jolley, Rippy, Ganley and Mattivi families who were among New Castle’s earliest settlers.

Celebration of Many Cultures Community BBQ and Potluck
In June, the Downtown Group will be hosting a Potluck in Burning Mountain Park. Come and enjoy bingo, live music, face painting and balloons for the kids. It is a fun event where you can meet someone new from the New Castle community.

School Activities
Coal Ridge High School, Riverside Middle School, Elk Creek Elementary and Kathryn Senor Elementary invite spectators to a wide range of sports activities, as well as musical and dramatic performances, and their own series of special events.
