The Adair County Humane Society has been awarded at $50,000 grant from the Petco Foundation through the University of Missouri College of Veterinary Medicine, funds from which will establish a surgery suite at the Kirksville animal shelter.

The surgery suite will help prepare shelter animals for adoption and to expose veterinary students to the needs of shelter animals.

“Establishing a surgery suite at the Adair County Humane Society will help ensure that all of the animals we adopt out are spayed/neutered prior to leaving the shelter,” said Krista Baker, director of the Adair County Humane Society.

“We are so grateful for our partnership with the University of Missouri College of Veterinary Medicine and for this gift they are receiving,” said Missy Decker, manager of the Adair County Humane Society. “Support like this not only helps to elevate the care that we are able to give to our shelter animals, but will make a meaningful impact on the lives of the animals.”

The surgery suite will be completed by the end of 2019. Beginning Jan. 1, 2020, all animals being adopted will be spayed/neutered.
