Battery Division Research Award

The Battery Division Research Award was established in 1958 to encourage excellence in battery and fuel cell research, and to encourage publication in ECS journals. This award defines the field of interest covered as “that area of electrochemical knowledge which deals with the mechanisms, theory, materials and design of devices (primary and secondary cells and batteries and fuel cells) in which the chemical energy can be converted into usable electrical energy by an electrochemical process.” Although this award is not limited to any particular age group, its primary purpose is to develop interest in battery and fuel cell science among younger electrochemists.

Recipient qualifications

The recipient(s) will be an author or coauthors of a paper or papers, at least one of which must have appeared in an ECS publication, reporting the new advances in knowledge of batteries or fuel cells. The importance and significance of the achievement or contribution shall be judged on the basis of the paper(s) in which it is reported. To be considered, the paper(s) must show scientific excellence of a high order. Factors to be considered include:

• originality of concept and design of experiments
• thoroughness of the experimental approach
• theoretical analysis
• logic of the conclusions
• clarity of presentation

The award is intended to recognize recent achievements or contributions to the field with potential impact on future research and development. Because the significance of the work may become more evident with time, consideration may be given to papers that have appeared as much as ten years prior to May 1 of the award year.

Award

The award consists of a scroll, a $2,000 prize and Battery Division membership for as long as the recipient maintains Society membership. The award recipient(s) will be asked to, but is not required, to present a lecture to the Battery Division at the fall meeting of the Society at which the award is presented. Discretionary travel grants may apply to facilitate meeting attendance. If the award is made jointly to two or more coauthors, each coauthor will receive all items listed.
