Mr. Robot paints an eerie holiday scene for Elliot and company in trailer for fourth and final season

Fans are getting a first taste of the fourth and final season of the drama-thriller series Mr. Robot, starring Rami Malek.

The trailer casts a dark cloud over Elliot (Malek) and the people caught up in the global chaos of his violent alter-ego, Mr. Robot (Christian Slater), during the holiday season 2015.

In this last journey, he sets off on a path to target the top one percent of the top one percent.

Turns out their pursuit puts them directly on the radar of dangerous entities like Whiterose (BD Wong) and the Dark Army, ruthless business man Phillip Price (Michael Cristofer) and the full apparatus of E Corp, and other unknown forces of terror.

The one minute teaser begins with images of Christmas in New York City as an eerie and suspenseful instrumental version of the classic song Silent Night plays in the background.

There's a dressed up Christmas tree, people skating on the rink at Rockefeller Center, a man dressed as Santa Claus riding on a subway and, finally, a slow pan to Elliot, who's also on the subway wearing a black hoodie over his head with Mr. Robot just feet away.

Then just as the clip fades to black Elliot can be heard saying, 'I need to get back to work.'

After a shot of a crisp, snowy night along a deserted road with the air covered in thick fog, Elliot can be seen back at work behind his computer.

'You go down this path,' Elliot says along with a scene of body being loaded into the back of coroner's truck, 'It will never end.'

'There will always be something else. Another symbol to destroy. More people to save. This is an endless war.'

The trailer climaxes with a quick image of 'they're listening' written on a notepad, and a montage that includes bloody flowers alongside someone passed out of a floor, drugs being dumped into spoon, Elliot panicked aboard a metro bus, and an attack in a kitchen.
