Luang Prabang and Chengdu established a sister-city relationship on October 27, 2016.
Luang Prabang is a province of Laos, located in the country's north. Its capital with the same name, Luang Prabang, was the capital of Lane Xang Kingdom during the 13th to 16th centuries. The province covers an area of 16,875 km2, and owns a population of 0.44 million in 12 districts. In 1995, it was listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site for its unique architectural, religious and cultural heritage, a blend of the rural and urban developments of over several centuries, including the French colonial influences during the 19th and 20th centuries. The Royal Palace, the national museum in the capital city, and the Phou Loei Protected Reserve are all important sites in the country.
The center of the Luang Prabang city consists of four main roads and is located on a peninsula at the confluence of the Nam Khan and Mekong River. Luang Prabang is well known for its numerous Buddhist temples and monasteries.

Contacts and Exchanges between Chengdu and Luang Prabang Province:
So far, Chengdu has approved 8 investment projects in Laos, involving the sectors of mining, electronics, optical cable manufacturing, and silk, etc.
As an important center of politics, education and business in northern Laos, Luang Prabang Province always strives to advance the partnership between Chengdu and Luang Prabang.
In December 2014, direct air link between Chengdu and Luang Prabang was launched. Lao Airlines offers three round-trip flights every two weeks. Besides, the air service between Chengdu and Vientiane with a stopover in Luang Prabang was open in 2016.
Prior to the establishment of the sister-city relationship between Chengdu and Luang Prabang Province, vice governor of Luang Prabang Province led a delegation to Chengdu to attend the 2016 China (Chengdu) Global Innovation and Entrepreneurship Fair, to seek more mutual exchanges and cooperation in tourism.
