Arts University Bournemouth (AUB) is a creative specialist, offering courses in art, design, media and performance, with an emphasis on collaboration within and between courses and with industry. Student Services and Facilities
Libraries and Information Services
- A purpose-built library houses a range of over 95,000 books, e-books and journals, including 5,000 DVDs. These are organised by subject using a system called Universal Access by Design, created by one of AUB'S Graphic Design graduates.
- With 144 group study spaces, 100 individual study spaces, 50 Macs and a TV/DVD viewing room, there's plenty of room for study.
- Students can borrow laptops (Mac or PC) for coursework from the library.
Student jobs
- There is a wide range of part-time work available in the Bournemouth and Poole area, and many seasonal job opportunities are available during the summer months.
- The AUB Careers Service provides details of part-time opportunities.
- AUB Students' Union advertises creative opportunities.
- AUB offers paid student ambassador roles too, working on open days, campus tours, school workshops, and careers and recruitment fairs.
Careers advice
- The university Careers and Employability Service offers advice and guidance on all aspects of careers and employability, through one-to-one consultations, regular workshops, and sessions integrated into academic courses.
- Courses are industry-focused and prepare students for employment in the creative industries, as demonstrated by the university's employability record.
- As an AUB graduate, you’ll have access to the Careers and Employability service for three years after graduation, including access to the careers hub.
- AUB also offers events and workshops run by the employability officers and industry professionals, supporting students in CV writing, networking and breaking into the creative industries.
Health services
- We encourage all new students to register with a local GP and dentist.
- GP appointments are available on campus Tuesday and Thursday lunchtimes.
- Regular visits from a mobile NHS dentist.
Counselling and Mental Health Support
- AUB Counselling Service has a team of professionally qualified and experienced male and female counsellors, offering student-focused therapeutic sessions.
Disability support
- The university has a Disability Officer who can advise on all aspects of student life, including personal support and reasonable adjustments, and a Well-being Officer offering specialist support to students with mental health difficulties.
- The campus is wheelchair accessible, with automatic doors, lifts and toilets all suitable for wheelchair users. While access to certain studios and departments may be limited, AUB will endeavour to arrange for classes and tutorials to be undertaken within accessible spaces wherever possible.
- Free priority parking is available for students with mobility difficulties.
Other services and facilities
- The Museum of Design in Plastics (MoDiP) is the only accredited museum in the UK with a focus on plastics. Housed in the library, it features more than 12,500 artifacts.
- TheGallery showcases work by contemporary artists and designers from around the world, including collections on loan from major galleries and museums – as well as taking centre stage for the Summer Shows, displaying the work of final year students.
- The Drawing Studio is designed by alumnus Sir Peter Cook, the first purpose-built drawing studio constructed in an art school for more than a century. Winning multiple architectural awards, it was officially opened by Dame Zaha Hadid in March 2016.
- Industry-standard equipment is available across the range of courses, with a dedicated print room, workshops, studio theatre, Passivhaus and maker spaces; and specialist 3 and 5 axis CNC milling machines. In addition, Bournemouth Film School uses industry-standard cameras and filming equipment, with three dedicated studios and a number of editing suites. AUB Textiles department is the only department in the UK with a ultrasonic welder for binding together man-made materials at a molecular level.
- A new innovation studio is due to be completed in 2019 or early 2020, to act as a base for small business start-ups.
Students' Union
- The AUB Students' Union works closely with students and the university to provide support in all areas of university life, including education, welfare, employment, sports, clubs, events and societies and more.
- It runs a student publication called BUMF, published each term as a printed magazine with updates online, and assists the student-led BUMF:Gallery.
- Every year, the SU plants a tree for each new student, to contribute towards carbon offsetting their time at university.

History
- AUB was founded in 1880 as a specialist art school.
- Bournemouth Film School (BFS) was established in 1963 as part of AUB (then Bournemouth and Poole College of Art and Design).
- AUB became a university in 2012.
Fascinating Fact
- Arts University Bournemouth Modelmaking alumnus Nick Robatto made most of the sonic screwdrivers for Doctor Who since the show was relaunched in 2005.
Notable Alumni and Famous Faces
- Simon Beaufoy – Oscar-winning screenwriter for The Full Monty and Slumdog Millionaire, and artistic director of the London 2012 Olympics opening ceremony.
- Wolfgang Tillmans – first photographer to win the Turner Prize, with works published in i-D and Vogue magazines.
- Mel Giedroyc – comedian and TV presenter best known for collaborations with Sue Perkins, also writer for French and Saunders.
- Sir Peter Cook – founder member of the Archigram group in the 1960s, awarded a knighthood for services to architecture in 2007.
- Edgar Wright – writer, director and producer, collaborating with Simon Pegg on the Channel 4 series Spaced and films Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz.
- Paul Norris – animation visual effects supervisor on films from Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (2004) to Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015), winning Oscar for Best Visual Effects for his work on the film Ex Machina (2015).
- Jim Cregan – co-founder of Jimmy's Iced Coffee.
- Harry Reid – best known as Ben Mitchell in Eastenders.
- Amaka Osakwe – Nigerian fashion designer and creator of the African-based fashion label, Maki Oh. Her designs have been worn by Beyoncé, Rihanna, Lady Gaga and Michelle Obama.
- Tom Hovey – produced over 20,000 illustrations for the Great British Bake Off.
